General question about performance/workflow/playback

I have built up a lot of motion tracking and Mocha Pro tracking along with several video layers and effects in one particular place in my project.

I want to see how it all looks when played back in real-time, but I can't because the performance bogs down to the point where it won't play it back at any reasonable framerate.

My system is top of the line (13900k + 4090rtx + 64gb ram), so I was wondering how people typically deal with this as I assume this would be a workflow issue.

Is there some way to render a preview before I commit to altering my project? Or should I save my project, render this one part out, and then go back to my save if I don't like it?

What is the typical way to attack this situation where the playback is bogged down? Is it typical to render sections as you work along on your project?

Thanks.

Yes, make a selection and press shift b for a temporary preview or shift m for one that you can use multiple times.

I wouldn't expect those type of effects to preview in realtime (nice system by the way! If you feel like benchmarking it against other users' systems see the links in my signature.)

Wow. That's awesome. Exactly what I wanted.

What's the disadvantage of using shift m? Does it use a reasonable amount of ram?

Shift B uses RAM

Shift M renders a file to the hard drive in the Temp folder

The disadvantage is it takes up a bit of disk space until its cleared. If you just want to see a transition once (to keep tweaking it) I'd do the shift b preview.
