What device are you using?

To "bank" between more than 16 channels, you need to assign MIDI msgs to the Channel up/down and/or Channel Bank up/down.

The up/down will move your devices channel assigments over by one.

The bank up/down will move the channels assigned to your control in increments of 16.

Note that you can only bank or shift if your Vegas project has MORE than 16 tracks + buses.

This assumes that there are some kind of buttons or keys that you can assign in addition to the faders on your controller device.

You need to set up a generic device as follows:

Go to the Configure Generic Control page in Vegas.
Create a New mapping and label it.
Set the number of channels to 16.

Make sure you are viewing the Function Group lable "Channels".

Learn or assign the devices buttons or key presses to the Channel up/down and/or Bank Up/Down.

When you are in surround mode, the front/rear/center/lfe are all assigned as seperate "channels". Additionally you can assign a single controller to always be the master fader.

You may also want to assign a button on your device to control the following:

Function Group : Assign : Toggle Automation mode. This puts the surface into and out of controlling the static track/bus gain or writing/reading automation env data.

Function Group : Assign : Set Audio/Video Modes

If your device has a limited number of buttons/keys, you may want to use one for a shit modifier so to allow more assignements.

Peter, thanx for the speedy reply
1-Using a Tascam TM-D1000 as a controller

2-In which "function group" are the frnt/rear/cntr/lfe channel assignments? when configuring the remote, i see no references to volume for the separate surround channels.

3-Also, is there a way to configure the button msgs to toggle mode?...when i hit mute on my controller it sends the mute command, but my mixer has two msgs...one for mute on and one for mute off...i have to end up pressing the mute button twice.

4-I only see one send for each channel...how do i add send2,3,...and so on controls?

Appreciate it

2. They are just exposed seperately by "magic" on to the surface. There is nothing you need to do special. The Master "assignment is always for the "front" pair. Note that the master bus is ALWAYS part of the main channel grouping. The special master fader is for devices that have a unique master fader and is so you always have a master fader at your finger tips.

3. No, not directly or easily. The generic driver is not very good at dealing with devices that have internal state. Can you configure the D1000 to send only a single msg when the button is pressed? What MIDI msg does the D1000 send out for channel mutes. (Email me for a possible work around.)

4. Sends are worked by selection since we many sends. In the Assign Function Group, there is a "Toggle Inc Send". What this does is put a fader or knob into send mode and lets you increment through all currently available sends.

Thanx
it seems that vegas put the surround channels at the end of the 3rd bank of my 32 channel project (45-48). It would be nice for vegas to somehow indicate which bank is currently selected. Again, thankx for the prompt support. I have other programs that i use , but i always have to come back to vegas for its collection of features and smooth workflow. All we need now is
rewire and OMF support! thanks

The order is by design. Tracks and then Buses, with Master first then sub buses, then FX buses.

The intent of the surface is as an alternate and independent UI rather than an extension of the screen GUI. We never had the intent or purpose to show the state of the external device on the GUI of Vegas. They are really very indepent of each other.

However, for devices like the D1000 and others, i could see where this would be useful.
