Open up both vegs then copy and paste from one to the other. I think that's what you want.

open 2 vegs in one instance of vegas?

i'm running version 8.

No. Open the first veg with Vegas. Open Vegas again with another veg or the same veg again then copy and paste from one to the other. You use the same V8 each time. You can open V8 many times with different projects at the same time.

That's what I have done, I have copied whole sections of stuff from one to the next to save time from recreating it.

I love having several working coppies of the same project at different stages. That way if I deleted something or screwed up the auto ripple big time, I can just copy the old into the new.

Okay, so you can put your subclips into bins and then drag the bins to a new project, or you can copy and paste the item from the timeline.

BUT, if you create a subclip and give it a name of your choice, the name doesn't get carried over to the new project. For example, I created a subclip in the trimmer and got a dialog box asking me to name it. I named it My Subclip. Now, I copy it to the second project and the subclip is now named "New track 1.avi - subclip 1". The default name.

Vegas has always done this as long as subclips have been a feature. It's a shame.

well for the life of me, i cant...

i even tried with 8.1 (the 64 bit version) and i have 2 instances of vegas running.

each one has 2 diff VEGs.

i select and SPLIT a section. i drag that from one instance to the other. the other instance looks like it can accept it. when i finish dragging, nothing drops.

sigh...

I haven't tried dragging it but I know copy and paste works OK.

...but then we have Regions which are global.

Very true, and regions can be very useful. Often more more useful than subclips because they have flexible heads and tails, and they get listed hierarchically in Vegas' Explorer under their parent clip. This makes it very easy to capture a long clip and then break it down into sections you might want to use, assuming you're working that way.

This gets into a little web of peeves of mine, though. To see subclips you have to use the project media window and to browser regions you have to use the Vegas Explorer window. I just wish they'd spend a little time on these two features to put a little more polish on them. It'd be much better if you could see regions in the project media window too!

On the bright side, we were reviewing Premiere Pro yesterday (it's the house system and we need to put a few web people like me onto it). One thing I really found lacking was a way to apply a filter to the project media listing. Vegas makes life very easy in this regard because I can filter for all clips with the word "Grip Truck" in their names and then copy them into a bin.

Life is easy with Vegas, in spite of the warts and the half-finished features. :-)
