Getting 5.1 sound from vob/mpegs

I have a Sony dvr403 camera that says it can record in 5.1 surround sound. When I import the files into vegas however, it appears to me that it always downmixes it to a stereo signal. When I play the clips from the timeline and look at the front / back sound levels they are always identical (so I am assuming it's downmixing it anyway).

What course of action should one take to get 5.1 sound onto the timeline properly if it can't be imported?

I grabbed BeSweet and the gui and have been running it against my vob's first (creating 6 seperate wave files) and then rename the vob to mpg, drag it to the timeline, delete the downmixed audio channel, add 6 new channels (1 for each speaker position), and drag the seperate wav files to the appropriate track. This seems to work, kludgy, but works...

Is there a better/easier/quicker way to do this, perhaps?

no but im waiting for 5.1 AC3 import support.. hell even 5.1 nested timeline support...
When workking with multiple vegas projects and trying to create one master project, all with 5.1 sources and your trying to create one master 5.1 project, the nested timeline compilation doesnt retain the 5.1 mix.. this is annoying, on numerous occasions ive had 4 to 5 Vegas intsances running siply so i could monitor the audio mixes for thsoe parts..
