Getting Video from VCR

I have 4 old tapes of home movies. The only way I have of transferring to Studio HD Platinum 10 is going through VCR. The way I have done this with Ulead VideoStudio is connecting VCR to HP Movie Writer dc3000. I have tried this with Platinum 10 and it will recognize the movie writer but it says its not powered on, however it is. Any suggestions?

Use Video Studio to capture and then Vegas to edit?

Do you have a DV camera? If yes, you could hook the VCR to the camera and then capture via firewire. I've done that many times.

Are you using the VidCap capture softare that comes with VMS?

Even if you are, most external USB video converters have special drivers that are desinged to work with specific software. While VMS (or VidCap) may see the device, it won't be able to capture from it.

If you can capture video with VideoStudio, continue to do so, save the files then edit with VMS.
