GIF Animation

Steve Mann wrote on 4/21/2011, 2:00 PM
I usually just use Photoshop to separate individual frames of an animated GIF to import into Vegas. Since animated icons are usually only 10-15 frames, it's not a lot of work. Now, however, I have a client with an animated presentation that was created using Ulead GIF Animator that is a full minute long. A lot more work than I want to do in Photoshop.

Is there an easier way to import the individual frames into Vegas that I am missing?

If you don't need an alpha channel, VirtualDub will open an animated GIF and export an image sequence that loads nicely into Vegas Pro.

What's wrong with opening the animated GIF directly in Vegas Pro?

I've never had much luck getting VDub to work for me. Which is strange considering that I used to be able to write some awesome programs in DOS Batch files.

But - maybe this will be the project for me to get off my butt and learn to use VDub.
Where do I start?

(Even if I need an alpha channel, I could probably key it in Vegas.)

When I have used animated GIFs in Vegas I have just dragged them onto the timeline and they do just fine.

Did you try opening the GIF directly in Vegas Pro?

Anyway here is a direct link to download VirtualDub. The link I copied from VideoHelp web site. http://www.videohelp.com/download/VirtualDub-1.9.11.zip

After running VirtualDub, open the GIF file with File >Open Video File and changing the file type in the dropdown box to Animated GIF (.gif).

Then File > Export > Image Sequence. I used TGA.

Irfanview will export a sequence from animated GIF, with alpha if I recall correctly.

Agree with Reber, no other software necessary. Just drag 'em to the timeline and they work.

"Drag n Plop!"

I haven't received the file yet.

It's a one-minute graphic demonstrating a chemical process.

Thanks for the replies. I should have guessed that the lack of similar questions in the forum history probably means that it isn't a issue....

Don't be so hard on youself, really. Yah never know, this flavour of GIF might just be the one that proves us all wrong! And if we hadn't been so "enthusiastic" about it then we'd be wrong too.

So, let's see - yeah? Could be that you still aren't out of the woods, so to speak.

Tell you what though, when I first did a GIF DnD straight onto the timeline, I FREAKED out! Fell off me chair.
