GLITCH IN THE FORUMS WHEN POSTING HYPERLINKS

FrigidNDEditing wrote on 4/12/2005, 8:21 AM
I post a link - I code in the little bit of HTML and drop in the URL, and everything is correct. I post it, and it shows up VERY wierd - and the link doesn't show up at all. I go edit the post, to see if everything is still there - it is, I click edit message. Now it all looks fine but there's a whole http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/ in front of the URL. The kicker is that that mediasoftware doesn't show up when I edit the link, no matter how many times I edit it in the "Body:" box. I have had this happen many times, and I'm wondering if you guys have too?

Hey, guys at Sony - do you know about this - and/or are you fixing it? Thanks

Dave

When entering the url, you MUST put in the http:// - if you don't, then it thinks it's on Sony's site.

I do, I've examined very closely the times when it happens, everything is correct but it still does it. Even so, if it were wrong, when I originally post it, it should still show up, not - just not be there with excessively strange table formatting all to the right side until I go in and change nothing, and just click the edit message button to keep any changes that would have been made.

I never had a problem with the old forums doing this, but now it happens once and a while - not everytime, just some times, and nothing changes. and it doesn't show up in the edit. I can't explain it, but I do it right, and it shows up. I just don't know what the deal is.

Here's what I use (replacing [ ] with < >)

[A HREF="http://www.mypage.com"]Click to go to my page[/A]

Seems to work fine for me.

Click to go to my page

that's the thing, it's not every time, but it does happen regularly.

I would guess that of the last 10 hyperlinks I've posted it's happened at least 2 times.

Dave,
I have never had a problem using the method I outlined here.

Do you sometimes omit the quotes?
craftech wrote on 4/12/2005, 11:35 AM
Never Ed.

This was copied directly out of the edit

a href="http://www.anim8or.com"

the " is what html does with quotes in hyperlinks (so that's not the problem)

do you see what I'm saying
it's right there - the forum puts its info in front of it but in the body of the text it's not even there.

Dave

EDIT:

You'll also note that that happened after the changes were implemented.

because there were no complaints of problematic links in any of the posts.

That particular post has & quot; instead of "
Chienworks wrote on 4/12/2005, 11:59 AM
Dave, that last one doesn't have the </a> at the end of the link. I also see that the forum software is doing something funky with the " marks, replacing them with the metacode instead. Try posting the link without the quote marks, and remember to put the </a> at the end.
FrigidNDEditing wrote on 4/12/2005, 12:57 PM
I'll try it without the Quotes from now on, and see if it changes anything - I knew it was changing them, and I wondered if that could be the problem, but it was only once in a while. I used to get so cheesed by that wysiwyg programs showing quotes as metacode when I would read the code, I don't really like too much that the forum does that too. It's been a few years since I was coding any websites - but I'm gettin back into it for my own again. So here's hoping I don't have to deal with many more code problems in the near future ;)

Marquat - cool it man - I was showing them the link, but for got to take off the < and > from it.

There was nothing that I did wrong in it. - so lay off

Dave,
I always use the quotes and NEVER have a problem using the format I described in the link above. Why don't you try it?

Just a test.

Worked fine for me. Until I "fixed it."
B_JM wrote on 4/13/2005, 6:27 AM
in this day and age - 99% of forums will autolink hyperlinks anyway -- you shouldn't have to write your own code in a forum of one the industry tech leaders :)

Personnaly, I prefer the "opens in a new page" option... :P
jetdv wrote on 4/13/2005, 6:44 AM
Purnice, YOUR link is incorrect so it did NOT work fine for you. Instead, your link is trying to go to a page on Sony's site instead of "resolutionart". Your's has & quot; instead of "
PumiceT wrote on 4/13/2005, 8:40 AM
WTF?? I posted... checked it... it worked... I went in to add my comment that it worked, and suddenly it's messed up!!! Ok, there's definitely some glitch here.

Perhaps the problem comes in when you edit a post that contains a link?

I fixed it again. I bet if I go in and change something else, it'll mess up again.

Yep, if you edit a message that contains a link, the actual quotation marks are changed to & q u o t ; (minus the spaces).

PS - The name is P u m i c e. I realize an M can look like RN in lower case sometimes. Not yelling, just pointing it out.
FuTz wrote on 4/13/2005, 9:08 AM

On top of that: I just, at the moment, had to re-log and re-do password etc...

PurniceT: Lauren will be SO glad in 20 years you did record this ... lol !

Oops. Sorry. Yep it looked like an "rn" to me (which is amazing close to "m")

Marquat, what you, and seemingly everyone else here don't seem to realize, is that I do the EXACT same thing every time, EVERY FREAKIN TIME, but it doesn't always work. I have coded my fair share of html and know what I'm doing in the case of creating a hyperlink on a forum. In case someone here doesn't seem to understand this - I put a quotation mark, and the forum changes it to the & quote ; less the spaces in there - that is the only thing I can guess would be the problem.

I just might try that plugin - does it change it for everyone? or just see a www.whatever.com and make it a link for you?

Pumice, you've got to stop making these mildly abrasive posts.

(Just kidding, if you were wondering.)
PumiceT wrote on 4/13/2005, 12:45 PM
Abrasive. *wink* I got it.

Yeah, my niece, Lauren, will be thrilled to see those videos someday. :)

So, what's the deal with this glitch? I'd hate to be a Sony guy and have to figure out how to change that!!
FuTz wrote on 4/13/2005, 3:39 PM

Again...
It did it again !
Will I have to re-log each time I come on the forum now?!
theforce wrote on 4/13/2005, 7:32 PM
Just for the record, if you enter a hyperlink (with the proper HTML syntax) on a post, it will work, every time. It's when you "edit", the post that will corrupt it. If you edit a post with a hyperlink, you need to "fix" the html of the link.
