Glitchy capture issue

I've had this in the past and am running into it again as I'm trying to salvage a shitty tape from work...

If I start capturing from the beginning of the tape by hitting "capture now" all of the video afterwards is just a huge blocky, glitchy, pixelated mess and the audio is low pitched. What I normally have to do to fix this, is start the tape running and then hit the button. Do I have a pre-roll option set up incorrectly or something? I use FCP at work and it never does anything of the sort...that I've come across so far.

Call me old-fashioned but I NEVER record anything critical on the first minute of tape as, if there are going to be problems, that's where they'll show up.
It's even worse if this is a tape that's been used a few times previously.
Other than doing a batch capture, your "start the tape running and then hit the button" method is the only workaround that I know of.

As far as FCP goes, maybe it waits until it sees a stable signal before it starts capturing?

I never re-use tapes...and I know as a rule of thumb I shouldn't record anything critical the first little bit, but I didn't know if this was Vegas or user problem. At work (FCP) I usually hit the capture button and then hit play on the camcorder and it works fine.

Occasionally, a header file can be corrupted on a tape, and whether it's FCP or Vegas, it sets up the project for problems. FCP is MUCH better at dealing with this, I've seen captures begin with problems, and then smooth out. Vegas won't smooth out until you stop the tape in a clean area.
