I don't know but SPOT, who tried LOTS of them, told in a post a few weeks ago that Fujitsu an Sony notebooks are the way to go with Vegas.

Can personally recommend the Sony GRX 570 - 16" screen has plenty of real estate, and the processor 1.6 gig, and 1394 connection make it perfect for editing. Have done a bunch of work on this setup.

well this one has 3.06 proc. 40 gig 5400 rpm firewire 540 something ram it's the exact same as the alienware m1 just by a differnet company.

Has anyone tried Vegas with one of the laptops based on the new Centrino chipset? From what I'm reading, a new 1.6 Pentium M processor will beat a 2.4 P4 by quite a wide margin and give something like six hours battery time as well!

Checked out your website, and the specs are awesome...
make sure that the company is a good one, and that you have a good
return policy.
I personally would opt for the bigger 16" screen (which I have and use).
Vegas has a lot of little windows, and you need as much screen real estate as you can get.
For the price, I'd also check what Sony has available in a 16" screen size. It's just that I trust Sony.
Good luck.

Yeah, I'm also looking into the new centrio but I just don't know enough about them. I would like to get a sony becuase they are reliable but i can't get one that's even comparable to the one on extremenotebooks.com for that price range.

Oh yeah does anyone know anything about the new centrio the battery life (4-6 hours ) sound really nice.

The only drawback I see is the 5400RPM drive...if you pland to use it for your capture source. Video likes 7200 RPM... the system looks good - but purchase an external firewire drive and go for it.

I looked at extreme notebooks several years ago...went with Dell and never had a problem when I had to go on location. Another good company is Alienware....

For that kind of money I think I'd rather get one of the Intel/AMD cheapo laptops offered regularly by Compaq/Toshiba/Dell etc., and customize it by getting an external firewire drive, and upping the ram to 512mb. I really doubt you'd notice any tremendous performace difference between a 2ghz celeron or AMD XP2000 chip, and the 2.4 P4. The 3.06 w/hyperthreading is a different story, as it's likely to render much faster than the others. Put your money where it'll make the biggest difference in your production capabilities, not where it's just going to shave a few seconds off of an operation here and there. As I recall, Vegas ran OK on even my 500mhz amd rig. Of course, rendering took forever and previews tended to be down below the 10 fps rate, but it ran fine.Chasing the latest chip of the moment is a losing game, you're always falling behind the curve.

Well i would go with alienware but if you read what the website says, the extreme laptop is the exact same as the area m-51 laptop on alienwares website.

I still have my eye on the centrino. They say they are just as powerful as a 2.6 mhz pent. 4 but consume less battery life. Anyone have any comments on this one ?

I liked the topic better when it was 'god' laptop before it changed to 'good'.
I find it very intriguing to wonder what laptop this mess was designed on.
AliasRomanian wrote on 5/5/2003, 10:00 PM
well then let's change it back to god laptop :) .

I don't think the laptop was assembled as a mess the only thing i'm worried about is if i should get the new intel centrino chipset or this one. Oh yeah , I'm also a gamer and that's the other reason i'm looking at this laptop.

"and on the seventh day, while the others were playing, he started thinking about laptop design ..."

My Sony (Vaio PCG-GRX3P) is now "old" at 7 months (P4 1.6Ghz), but it does everything I ask of it. I use mainly external drives but if I have to I can capture to the built in 5400 rpm without dropped frames. With a 16.1" screen and 1600 x 1200 resolution, there's plenty of room for Vegas, and it can run in dual screen mode if required.

Whether it's a "god laptop" I'm not sure, but I often look up and think how grateful I am to have it!

I purchased a ProStar laptop a few years ago and it worked out fine. I had a problem after about a week and I shipped it back overnight and got a new one the next day from them. My wife still uses it. They have their own web site @ www.Pro-star.com.

Keep in mind, the P4 2.53,2.66,2.8 all have the 533 FSB. You might be just as well getting the 2.66 or 2.8.

Good Luck
