What are the restrictions with the educational version? Were these specified when you bought the product?

I believe the educational licence is only good while you are a registered student, as soon as you graduate and are no longer a student you cannot "legally" use the Academic version of Vegas. I believe you will have to pay the upgrade price for Vegas in order to upgrade your licence, but I'm not positive. Anyone from SoFo feel free to chime in on this one.

the educational liscence is the same as the commercial liscence. The difference students/teachers get a discount.

Once you graduate, you can not legally use it for professional use (to make money). Call Support, maybe they will give you a deal. The functionality is the same between the educational license and commercial one.

An official answer by SoFo on the academic vs retail (no mention of a 'commercial" liscence) liscence is here:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=160820&Page=0

it basicly says if you are a teacher/student all you get is a discount. No change in the liscence. The SoFo guy makes no mention of paying extra $$$ to "upgrade" to a commercial liscence because you CAN make money with the academic "version."
It would also make no sence (and be imposible to enforce) making people with academic copies to pay extra $$$ when they graduate. Infact, there was a topic on this months ago, and SoFo said that once you buy it it's yours. No need to pay extra $$$.

Now Sony may have a different agrement, but I checked the SF software EULA a couple minute ago, and it hasn't changed. It wouldn't suprise me if Sony will include a "You cannot make $$ with the academic product" in future versions, but as of right now you get about a 50% discount (lucky people!)

So what about people who have friends, children etc.. in school and they just have them buy the software and then they use it even though they aren't in school, seems kind of unfair to the rest of us who pay for the full version. Something tells me there has to be something in the licence that doesn't allow you to legally use the software unless you are in school. If not I'm just gonna have my g/f who is in college buy a lot more software for me :)

As long as you don't mind the program being registered to someone else, go for it.

According to Jdodge on that linked thread, you can use the Academic version commercially. It is only the initial purchase that is different.

The software says you're not alowed to transfer the liscence without permission. I feel the same way about the price. When I went to college ('98-00) all the academic has specific EULA's that said you couldn't use it for commercial use. Didn't matter if you gave stuff away for free, just no comercial use. I know that if I was a student and I could of getten Vegas+DVD for less then the price of a non student's copy of just Vegas, i would of.

As to what's stopping people: being honest. That's why I didn't pirate Vegas. It's a great program and SoFo deserved my hard earned $$$.
