I live in Canada - NTSC, and about to visit relatives in Hungary - PAL (I think). I would like to make a DVD that would be viewable either in a desktop or PC DVD player. Could someone please give me directions RE: how to save the video onto the DVD so that it could be viewed there?
Any PC will play either an NTSC or PAL DVD. In addition, Jim Taylor's book "DVD Demystified" says that most PAL players can handle NTSC disks also, since NTSC is the dominant DVD standard. They output an NTSC-like signal called 60Hz-PAL that uses NTSC scanning with PAL color encoding. The book says most PAL TVs sold since the mid-1990's can handle this oddball signal.
Maybe I'm being excessive, but I'd burn like 3 PAL DVDs and one (or two) NTSC DVDs. I'd sure privilege PAL since we're talking about Europe (yes, WE are *stuck* with this NTSC standard).
All of this just to be sure that when I'm there, I can play one of them without any problem and avoid that "OK, I'll send you a good copy when I'm back" situation... On top of that, you then will know exactly what works best.
