Good motherboard

Well what a week it's been. I've learnt a lot about computers that I thought I would never have to know. My previous postings have been about printing to tape problems and it looks like I have been foolish in choosing my motherboard and chipset (A DFI AD70-SC with a Via KT266A chipset). I've tried everything and since I have just got the new pc to try video editing I am seriously thinking of replacing the motherboard and chipset.

Since I know so little about this sort of thing I would be grateful if readers could give me some advice:

1. I take it that I can't replace just the chipset and that it is an integral part of the motherboard?

2. Could anyone recommend a good motherboard and chipset for using Vegas with the rest of my stuff :

a) 256 DDRam

b) MSI NVidia MX400 Videocard

c) Windows XP

d) Firewire card (D-Link DFW 500)

e) Surecom ethernet Adapter EP-320X-R

f) Ricoh CD-R/RW MP7240A CD Writer

g) 60gb ide Seagate 7200 RPM HDD

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hello,

I read your other posts, and did you try replacing the Memory in the computer, because I think that could be your problem. Get a good quality memory module to replace it with, One that meets Intel Specs.

Try that and let me know what happens.

See ya, Rockit

You can't just replace a chipset. However there may be improved drivers. Check your motherboard site. Ditto for your video card. Be sure you have the latest drivers and of course do the same for bus mastering so your hard drive is running at top speed.

One of your problems could be that you're using XP. Because XP is fairly new, some hardware vendors may not as yet released full drivers. This is particually true for video cards and CD burners which may need a firmware update. All the newsgroups and forums for XP are filled with comments on those topics. Of course you also checked to see if there is a new BIOS for your motherboard that fully takes advantage of XP. If you can't find XP drivers for everything try Win2000 drivers until XP ones are released.

All I can say is EVERYTHING is flying along on my XP system (AMD 1200 with DDR memory) but it took a little effort to find all the latest drivers, patches, upgrades.

Thankks for that. I've been to the Via site and have the latest 4 in 1 drivers and I've been to the mother board manufacturer's site as well - so before you started on your quest did you have print to tape problems?

Thanks for that Rockit - this has sure been a learning experience and I'll check out the memory specs of what I have and see if that is indeed the problem.

No print to tape issues but couldn't get my CD burner to complete a CD due to improper bus mastering.

Your chipset is definitely not the problem. I've been running the KT266A, (btw, the fastest chipset out there according to things read on a # of hardware sites),on a Soyo Dragon plus-(the plus is v. important, the older Soyo Dragon board ran the KT266,-a dog)and it's a dream. Can highly recommend the Soyo boards, tons o' tweaks and very stable. Dont know about DFI, but a mb upgrade might do it. The Dragon also has onboard 6 channel sound, ethernet connection, and a serial card reader.
