Hi, Question, why is my video of the road showing artifacts? IO thought it was from using LUTs but even the raw video is kinda crappy.

@Ruby888

I find your post a small bit confusing, maybe because i'm not familiar with gopro footage.

The 1st video info is for mp41 which is considered nowadays to be near obsolete codec. The 2nd. one, avc, looks ok.

Can you post mediainfo output of file.

Is it that there are 2 video streams in the file and vp is displaying or probably only loading the 1st. poorer mp41 .stream. If that is the case the 2nd. video stream, which is not getting loaded is probably better quality.

Ideally make available a sample in say dropbox to download.

Simpler explanation for my confusion with your post is that you are displaying info on 2 different files as there are 2 different durations.

I took a screen capture of the video, you can see the shades in the pavement "shift"

#1. Is the screen capture the MP41 file?

#2. Does the original have same issue?

Yes if you watch the road, the colors shift around, I am not sure whats causing this.

What @johnny-s is asking, is if the "File" you supplied the MediaInfo for, is Two (2) files, merged into one. Espcecially since there is a "Time Difference" between the supposed files. I just did a short little capture with my GoPro Hero 5 Black, with viewing the settings your file lists (The actual .mp4 file), and here is my MediaInfo:

The settings match up (not length of course!). And however your file was combined, it does not have the .lrv (GoPro's "Low Resolution Version - a.k.a. Proxy"), as here is the MediaInfo from the same exact .mp4:

They match! So your file is what others' might call a "Frankenfile". And long ago, for the "Way Back Time Machine", even with the GoPro Hero 5 Blacks' "compression", a proxy would be needed; or transcoded, or use the "Old" GoPro Studio to convert to an .avi file - which worked great in Vegas Pro and the now discontinued Vegas Movie Studio. And if you look in my signature, you will see my computers, software, and cameras I use.

Thanks for the assistance @Chief24 as user of that camera.

I suspect that there are 2 files info supplied by OP in 1st. post and that the MP41 file is the screen capture and the one that OP has issue with.

It would be a help if OP would clarify what's what and if my guess is correct. Otherwise what's the point of trying to address an issue without proper information.

If you look at the clip I captured with Snagit, you can see the road, black pavement color "shifts in some areas" shift I am meaning it looks like the resolution was too low. Just look at the road only, nothing else. Then you will see what I mean. The road goes dark, then light it does not look normal.

Looks like the bit rate is too low to me.

I can not find the original file, but I have the rendered one and its horrible. I am going to try new settings in my GoPro 5 and re-shoot. Here is the rendered file. I don't understand bit-rates.

andyrpsmith wrote on 10/3/2025, 4:40 AM

In your rendered template there will be a choice of bit rates, the data rate at which the video is encoded. If it is too low you get horrible blocky video much like what you are getting. Screen shot your render template.

Here you go

The original video is poor as if it was encoded with a low bitrate. It's not just the road that is bad. Look at the grass areas.

But media info shows the original bitrate as 45 Mb/s which is more than adequate for good quality 1080. Likewise the render template of 20Mb/s should give good quality. Something is not as it should be here.

I fond the file, I ran it through Camtasia 2020 and it turned out better than Vegas, but still had problems with detail on the tree leaves. People say to record on 2.7K on the GOPro and render in 1080. I will try that.

andyrpsmith wrote on 10/3/2025, 7:39 AM

Ruby, try the AV1 template and hit the customise button and then change the bit rate to 50 ave and 100 max. If this still shows blocking there is definitely something wrong.

Its better, a lot better but the leaves still look messed up, I just watched the original and its the same there as well. I am trying new video settings on the GoPro 5. Will report back when I take the footage, weather permitting. Thank you for your help.

These are the video settings you can choose in the Hero 5

HERO5 BLACK VIDEO RESOLUTIONS Video Resolution (RES) FPS (NTSC/ PAL)1 FOV Screen Resolution Aspect Ratio 4K 30/25 Wide 3840x2160 16:9 4K 24/24 Wide, SuperView 3840x2160 16:9 2.7K 60/50 48/48 24/24 Wide, Medium, Linear 2704x1520 16:9 2.7K 30/25 SuperView, Wide, Medium, Linear 2704x1520 16:9 2.7K 4:3 30/25 Wide 2704x2028 4:3 1440p 80/80 60/50 48/48 30/25 24/24 Wide 1920x1440 4:3 1080p 120/120 Wide, Narrow 1920x1080 16:9 1080p 90/90 Wide 1920x1080 16:9 1080p 80/80 SuperView 1920x1080 16:9 1080p 60/50 48/48 30/25 24/24 SuperView, Wide, Medium, Linear, Narrow 1920x1080 16:9

Maybe try 1080p 30 fps rather than 60fps.

AV1 at 50/100 will produce a virtually identical copy of your source. So if defects are still visible in the leaves then the source is likely to have the same.

@Ruby888 Hi, I have a GoPro Hero 4, I'm using a GoPro 11 now & the batteries for my Hero 4 aren't working anymore so I can't check but it used to provide better video than your video above. You shouldn't have to change to 2.7 K, 60fps to get a better picture, poor light can cause that kind of issue but you're filming outside & it looks bright enough. Try going into the GoPro Preferences & resetting/restoring your GoPro.

Alright re shot the place, the sun was quite low so the lighting is harsh, no color adjustments. It see seems better that the other one, I used this You Tube video to set up my GoPro 5. I use 60fps (This upload looks crappy, its better on my system)

I uploaded it to YouTube and it looks like crap. Maybe 60fps is causing problems?
