I have Sony Vegas Pro 12 running on a Windows 7 Pro PC. Looks like my Windows does not support the HEVC codex because when I try to import a 4K MP4 video from my GoPro, Sony Vegas won't display it. Is there a solution to my problem?
VP 12 can edit 4K video, though it can't directly export it. Converting to AVC should work well and if performance isn't great you can always create proxy files (right-click on the media).
It was. I used VP 12 to edit DJI and GoPro files and remember being annoyed that the other shooters did them in 4K as I had to proxy everything and it took hours.
I stayed with 12 until VP 15, so it wasn't so long ago for me.
Sounds like it may be time to upgrade to VEGAS Pro 19 which can easily handle those files.
For easily editing those 4k files besides VP19 also recent hardware is needed.
SVP12 was released in 2012 (almost 10 years ago) that were the days of AVCHD editing, so I still wonder that SVP12 was already 4k ready. My first 4k camera dates from 2016.
V12 was inherently poor for even avc footage from a a GoPro. I even had a special handling option in the ImportAssist tool of HOS for V12 GoPro. +1 for @jetdv suggestion for a time to upgrade. Even with the latest version, you may have problems with playback for certain HEVC options such as 4k 60P. But, for the current low price of an upgrade, it's well worth it. Additionally, other render options such as Voukoder (free) are not supported in V12 so you are stuck with the limited native render options.
