I think asking Visual Infinity that question would be better. I don't think Sony actively ask third party developers to make stuff for Vegas, unless it's one of the big ones or if they have the best idea this side of th 21:st century.
To me it sounds like a good idea though. Maybe you should suggest the tool to be a Sony made native plug-in for future updates of Vegas? Use the "Product Suggestion" under the support menu on this site.
I think our old friend Satish is working on some plug-in that will make many Photoshop and VirtualDub filters available to Vegas. Meanwhile you can use VirtualDub standalone or experiment with this plug-in for Vegas: http://mikecrash.wz.cz/vegas/vegas.htm
>or if they have the best idea this side of th 21:st century.
Uh, Grain Surgery *is* one of the best ideas this side of the 21st century :-) Really, its an incredible tool for stills. Bet it would do wonders reducing the amount of noise and consequently improving the mpeg encoding as well.
Hehe, I looked into it and it seems pretty damn good. They have a GS2 plug for "Shake" and another one for "film and DV", but only the PS version tryout is downloadable.
I do not use VirtualDub myself but I've heard many people on this forum praise the different noise reduction filters in it. Temporal noise reduction is the "thing" and as of now Vegas can't work with that temporal method. That's what I've heard anyway.
Through looking through various links I did manage to find a link to a trial version of the DV version from the Visinf site.
I tried it out in AE, and the results are absolutely incredible. Using it straight the noise on a noisy clip (such as one underexposed clip I had) was superb with barely any loss of sharpness. With tweaking the result was absolutely perfect. Now while I don't advocate using the filter as an excuse to be sloppy while shooting footage, for problem stuff it seems like a Godsend.
The virtualdub filters don't even come close! The only downer is that the filter seems even slower than the Magic Bullet filters. But for rescuing bad footage I can put up with that.
Simon. Could you post the url to the DV version here? The only trial I see on their site is for the Photoshop plugin. I also e-mailed them and still have no response, and the product looks very, very enticing. Also, maybe you could make the DV version demo available for download somehow.
Thanks.
Hey guys. I called the customer service at Visual Infinity and here is the scoop. The DV version/engine of the Grain Surgery was bought by Adobe and is now part of the AE starting with version 6.5. Although Visual Infinity still supports version 2, they now only make and sell the plugin for Photoshop.
I have grain surgery for Photoshop and have exported short segments of video as .jpg sequences out of Vegas and then use photoshop to batch process all of those sequences with the GS Plugin. Then reimport the jpg sequence in Vegas works very nicely, though it takes a little while to process in PS..
Also I forgot to say that although Adobe have incorporated it into AE, Visinf still make the algorithms available to anyone that would want to develop the plugin for their own application, such as Vegas.
