I don't know which to recommend, but I would advise you to be sure that your Dell power supply has enough power to upgrade your videocard. Dell's are notorious for providing the minimal power to drive the stock components.

Thank you for that information. How can I tell if the power supply is enough?

NOVAdash wrote on 7/24/2021, 6:17 PM

The amount of power it puts out should be enough for either of those cards; they aren't hogs by any stretch. Indeed, after looking them up, they don't even require an external cable from the PSU to be connected. I think as long as your motherboard supports PCI Express 2.0, you're good to go.

EDIT: The AMD card you listed requires PCI-E 3.0. They are backwards compatible so if your motherboard is already 3.0 compatible, it will run a 2.0 card. (But if your motherboard is only 2.0, it will not run 3.0)

Thank you for the help and assistance. My desktop is under 3 month old so I assume it it PCI-E 3. However I will check before I order.

Have to ask folks, as I can't find the information regarding the motherboard on the window system. How can I check if the motherboard is 3, without opening the desktop and invalidating the warrantee?. I know i'll invalidate if I install a video card, but I don't want to go down the invalidation route until I am sure.

So in trying to help you I helped me. I have found that if you open a cmd prompt and type (or copy/paste): wmic baseboard get product,Manufacturer, version, serialnumber , it will tell you your motherboard information. I tried it on my own and I got facial expressions from my PC like I was spying on it (weird, right?).

Glad to be of service. Still don't know what I'm doing. But I do feel good. Thank you. Taking your advice even further. I contacted the company that built the computer for me. Are you ready for this? They said that if I use my phone on Skype, they will talk me through the installation. How good is that?

Just love this forum

Hello, Ross!

I had the same dilemma when deciding on a GPU for my used HP Z440 server. As far as I could tell, Vegas' built-in GPU-acceleration supports AMD cards natively, while BorixFX' plug-ins support NVIDEA cards exclusively. It was a tough choice, so I went with both: AMD for the desktop and an NVIDEA for the laptop.

• HP Z440 Xeon v3 desktop: AMD Radeon RX470 4GB GDDR5 (native Vegas GPU-acceleration).
• Asus Ryzen 9 5900HX laptop: NVIDEA GeForce RTX3060 6GB GDDR6 (BorisFX GPU-acceleation).

The benefit of buying a new laptop is that you can get a pretty fast graphics adapter without paying the premium above-market price. I bought my desktop's AMD GPU off eBay for $200 (just a bit more than what they sold for new in 2016 at $179). To better your odds on eBay, I would recommend using a sniping service like Gixen (highly recommended!).
