Grazie Makes First DVD in DVDA2 - PPPhhhoarrhh .. !

That was too easy! There HAS to be something more than that - surely? Haven't I got to understand nuclear physics or something? No, I refuse to believe that is it!! - I'm not having it .. I'M NOT HAVING IT!!! Sony should take the blame for this! Totally unacceptable and NOT very professional! I mean if I can do it . .when will it end??? You're gonna have every Tom, Dick and Harry burning pro-type DVDs . . then WHERE will we be? HmmHmm HHmmmm! Answer me this???

. . honestly that was great . . a guy should not have such fun. . . and on a Sunday too!!

First and ONLY mistake I made was to put the video I wanted burnt, into the t/l - the poor old Menu said "What!? 3gbs! get outta here there is a limit yer know to Menu creation !! " . .silly me . . . once I showed the actual clip as a piece f media I was off . . SONY, the menu-user list was very polite and easy to see what I'd done wrong.

I had to re-calibrate my tv to see the colour values correctly, part from that, very straight forward . . Okay, now onto Menu Creation - proper. I just wanted to reassure myself my £30 DVD player could play my DVDs before I went totally beserk!

Can I delete what I've put onto a DVD-R and start again? I want to add incrementally to my DVD up-skilling, by using the "same" DVD platter - can I do ths?

Grazie

No. Not with a DVD-R. You can with a DVD RW, but -R and +R are finished formats. Might as well toss it. That's one reason DVDRW is more money, but be sure your DVD Burner can manage DVDRW.

Good on you, sir!

Ummmm, you'll need a DVD-RW for this. DVD-Rs are once-only things.
Grazie wrote on 5/9/2004, 7:55 AM
Okay okay . .I knew that . .forgot . . idiot! - Well I've got DVD+RWs. Will there be any silly "learning" curves that'll get in my way moving finally across to DVD-Rs, when I fianllly DO it? - Oh, there is the Preview function to ensure all is correct - yeah?

I've did the thingy at 1x. Can I increase to 2x? The platter says it is guaranteed to 2x? Does this mean the burn speed? I'm presuming the 2x burn speed is not related to the computer "creating" the DVD format and menu structure?

Kelly, I've sent you my tiny graph thingy . . PLEASE scrub my Media Pool . . forgot to do it . .

Thanks lads .. . Good stuff this DVD option? Perhaps someone should tell Sony to get into this market and away from VHS tapes? Good Idea!!? - I think so . . .

Am I gonna bore you all in the next couple of weeks!

Best regards,

Grazie

If your DVD burner is able to burn 2X it should work. If it has the option of 2X when you go to burn it then it should be OK. My DVD burner is an older Pioneer, it will only burn DVD-RW at 1X. It will do DVD-R 2X.
Also I have not been able to get a DVD-RW (re-writable) to playback on my DVD player, but maybe yours will. You could try a short test dvd on a DVD-RW first.

Concerning your DVD-RW problem:

Are you using + or - format? I've had trouble with the - format in some DVD players as well. From my lower-end model as well as my brother's higher-end model. Seems to me that DVD-RW- is what beta was to VHS. Sooner or later, one has to go and I think it's gonna be the - format. I've also heard arguments that the quality of the DVD-RW is critical. I've used Memorex and Fujifilm and have had much better results with Memorex (mind you, the Memorex are + and the Fujifilm are -.) I mainly use the Fujifilm's for mass data backup now.

Grazie, does it mean you did not have or use DVDA 1, or that DVDA 2 is so much easier?

. . er . . Torsie I read your post thrice . . I think I'll say:

1 - No I haven't had DVDA1

2 - Yes I have made DVDs - U-Lead £45 MovieFactory

I had been reading the repsonses here and there about DVDA1 and thinking I would be outta my depth . .evenm more with DVDA2 . . pleasant surprise . . GREAT SURPRISE! It was totally intuitive and very very addictive . .. it's like having the Veags first time experience all over again with Menu creation/s . . . am I being silly? I think not!!

Not at all. Silly you - perish the thought!
I just wondered what the comparison was. As a soon to be upgrader from DVDA 1 to DVDA 2, and having DVDA 1 as my only reference point ... well, you get the picture. I'm glad you think it's going your way.

goshep,

My DVD burner is a Pioneer DVD-RW, it is an older one before the + even came out I think. I only have one DVD-RW disk, it is also a Pioneer. I may try buying a newer DVD-RW disk and try it. Mine is Version 1.1 which I think is still the current version. I have only tried playback on my playstion2 and my new Samsung STB player DVD HD-931. So do you think DVD+R is better than DVD-R for player compatibility, NOT including the RW disks?
I'm getting a new computer and I could buy a new burner, but I was planning on just moving my old one over to the new PC.
Thanks, Bill

akaRadar,

I wouldn't bet the farm on it but I've had better results with the + format. At best the - format has been a 60/40 success rate.
I'm using the original Sony +/- DVD-R/DVD-RW which was "cutting edge" when I bought it. It is a solid burner so I'm eliminating it as the weak link in the process. As I said earlier I've tried the - format on el cheapo DVD players and on mucho expensivo models with the same marginal results. Memorex and Fujifilm are supposed to be pretty good DVDs so my hypothesis is that the format is the issue. I'm by no means an expert and Spot and many others here have burned heaps more DVDs than me so take this advice at your own risk... :) Good luck!

Tor,

I had DVDA1 and now have DVDA2. It is miles above DVDA1! I love it and it supports telecine video too!

Grazie, congrat's on the DVD. Youv'e got a "real" production studio going now.

goshep, I've had good success with -r, so I'm just curious, your -r DVD's that don't work, how do they fail? I mean, does the player just not see the disk as a DVD or does it try to play it and then sputter and quit after the content starts? I ask this because, a lot of times with DVD's, too high a bitrate is the problem and not necessarily the player not being able to read the format.
Ronomy wrote on 5/10/2004, 4:03 AM
Yes it does! Drag in an elementary file that is 23.976 but plays back at 29.976 and DVDA2 will scan the file and play it back correctly. It will also allow you to make very nice DVD's. It is about time they added this support. I want to convert my fathers old home movies and needed this support to create DVD's.
