Can anyone recommend a great text / graphics program that works as a plugin instead of a stand alone program? Also looking for a great particle program as a plugin / fire, rain. snow etc?
I use Boris Graffit and FX. Upgraded from the LTD versions included with Vegas. They are not the easist things to use, so in my opinion, the jury's not back in yet re firm recommendation.
I second the (qualified) endorsement of Boris Graffiti... for its price range, and given that it works (more or less) within Vegas, it's got a good amount of titling power for the price.
The qualification of the endorsement is that it's not that easy to learn. I've used it on a few projects, with several weeks between each one, and I find myself having to re-learn it each time I come to it. I keep meaning to create an "idiot's step-list" for myself, but I haven't done that yet.
There have been a project or two where I've been in a hurry to get some relatively simple scrolling titles done, and I've passed on using Graffiti because I didn't have time to re-learn even that functionality. Despite all that, I still like what it can do, when I have the time to work properly with it. And it's probably the case that folks who use it with any regularity get to be almost intuitive with it. I'm just not there yet.
I too think that Boris Graffiti is a good choice and the price of $149 for the upgrade from the LTD version to the full/plugin is reasonable.
I actually use Boris Red (which has Graffiti built into it) and found that the learning curve was fairly steep. But once you learn it, you will find that it is very powerful. I created a bunch of presets for the types of titles I use most often so I don't have to start from scratch every time.
I've been watching for a great titler for Vegas for several years. To be honest, it's rare that a movie uses anything but basic white text. But there are occasions where I want something unique with text. I've tried dozens of times using Graffiti, and I'm usually up until about 2 am still messing with a basic name and title for an interviewee. I've written down the steps when I finally get what I want, and I use the same steps the next time, and it doesn't come out right. Graffiti has so much potential but it's too frustrating. I produce inexpensive "biographical documentaries," and it was taking 1/3 of my time just trying to get Graffiti to work. I'd pay good money for a quick and easier titler that works WITHIN Vegas as a plugin.
100% agreement on Boris. What should take 15 minutes to set up and complete became maddening. Photoshop has infinite titling possibilities and AE has dozens of presets to put them into motion. Bluff Titler is easy and fun.
I've been using Blufftiitler, which has excellent price/performance -value but its not a plugin. You always need to render and leave Vegas to make titling.
Same applies obviously to Power CG Plus, and $395 is ridiculous price for a titler. I get Vegas cheaper.
Then there is Heroglyph from proDAD but it has even more awful interface than Boris.
Actually I've started to experiment with standard Vegas titling with Pixelan Spicemaster and I've got some nice titles.
Probably I'll get also Boris FX + Graffiti bundle for $399 or $299 if I qualify for upgrade (don't have the FX LTD, was it included with V6?).
GAWD! You'd think that SOMEbody would do a workflow, ease of use study on some of these things. A decent interface SELLS Product faster than just about anything. That's what got me into Vegas in the first place.
