Green lines in BetaSP playback

Hi, we are prepping some BetaSP footage for a DVD and I am getting some moving green lines at the top of some of the footage; not sure if it’s the deck tension or a bad tape; any suggestions for removing the interference in Vegas? Some of the footage is B&W so I applied the B&W filter over it but other parts are color. "Zooming in" the track is not an option. Thanks in advance for any advice.

How are you capturing the SP tapes.
I assume though from what you're saying it seems they're (the lines) on the original tapes. What sort of SP deck are you playing back on?
There's some magic that can be performed in the analogue domain that's either impossible or very difficult to do in the digital world.
Probably all you can do in Vegas is either zoom in slightly which isn't such a good idea as involves interpolation or else mask the offending lines. If they're outside safe area hardly anyone will see them anyway but the encoder may not like them if they're not stable.

Last time I saw green lines on a SP deck was just before it dies (well, not JUST before, maybe 100 hours).

If the deck doesn't have many hours on it, the tape could be (going) bad. Can you check it with another tape?

Bad Video Head. 99 times out of 100 that is it. Replace head, align, enjoy.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. Its a UVW1400 with some time on it for sure. Plays many other sources without an issue. I guess if the tape is even slightly bad an older machine will not handle it as well. Gotta get this project out the door - perhaps this scene WILL be letteboxed :)

May be stating the obvious, but might try fast forwarding tape all the way to the end ,then rewind and try again

With the SP player I worked on it was the decoder card. :)
