Grid on both Preview Screen and Trimmer Screen

Len Kaufman wrote on 5/10/2017, 7:48 PM

I'm using Vegas 14. I like having the grid set on my Video Preview Screen (separate monitor), as I'm frequently straightening horizons. But the problem is that the grid also is applied to the trimmer screen. Because the trimmer screen is set relatively small, as I don't want to give up too much screen "real estate," the grid is a hindrance to seeing what's in the trimmer clearly. Is there a way to just have the grid appear on the Video Preview Screen and not on the Trimmer? And, if not, might this be a good feature to request?

Thank you.

The grid switches off by using the "Video preview on external ..." function
You have to undock the preview window and pull it to the separate monitor

Hi Quitter,

I think you misunderstand my question. The video preview is on the separate monitor, complete with grid. That part's fine. The problem is that the grid is also on the trimmer. I don't want the grid on the trimmer.

I hardly use the trimmer but I would agree, it would be nice to have an option to switch off the overlay on the trimmer.

Just switch the grid ON/OFF when you need it or switch the trimmer preview to an external monitor, the external monitor will not show the gridlines.

3POINT....What I'm trying to avoid is constantly having to switch back and forth from grid to no grid. As I said in my OP, I use it a lot. Much of the work I do is on a monopod, kinda' run and gun style. So I am in constant need of straightening the horizon.

Also, the external monitor is already being used for the Video Preview. Besides, the grid does show, when you place the trimmer on an external monitor.

I switched to external monitor on my trimmer screen and the grid did not show, but it is an aggravation to have to constantly switch off and on. I had never noticed before that is shows up on both screens. I checked the internal settings and there is no switch for that.

I didn't say to place the trimmer on an external monitor, I said, switch the trimmer preview to an external monitor (right click trimmer window and select 'Trimmer on external monitor').

Also it's no problem to use the external monitor also for the Video Preview (the external monitor never shows the grid lines).

Hi again, 3POINT. While it's true that when I click on the feature (Trimmer on External Monitor) there is no grid on the image, that trimmer image then blocks the video preview screen, so I still end up having to switch back and forth. I don't see why, at least from a non-programing point of view, why the grid needs to show upon the trimmer, as we can't adjust the horizon in the trimmer.

When I put both, preview window and trimmer on External monitor, my external monitor shows me the timeline or the trimmer (without grid). The preview switches between trimmer or the timeline, depending on were I'm working on that moment.

The purpose of the grid or safe areas is not only for horizon adjustments.

When the grid in the trimmer is boring you that much, I just would change the workflow a little bit. First do all the trimmings and than switch on the grid and do all horizontal adjustments, or do the trimming directly on the timeline which is sometimes much quicker than the trimmer, especially when you use a jog shuttle.
