When cost-effective commercial codecs are available, I'm sure Sony will have a look at them.
I wouldn't hold my breath.

You can install a codec and render to it, the way vegas has always worked. For example Divx supports h.265, the only problem is that they save inside a .mkv container. Win10 will support h.265 and mkv natively. So it depends on what you mean by support.

exactly which h.265 codec are you claiming can be installed, and be available for playback and/or rendering, in vegas?

win10 isn't going to be released until sometime well into next year, not sure why you'd bring that up.

here is a link to a sample nx1 file: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3753891 if anyone wants to check it out.

i'd rather not install divx if its version of h.265 isn't usable in vegas... the definition of "codec support" in vegas should at least include the ability to create proxy files for editing, even if there isn't any gpu acceleration, or export/encoding capability.

I dropped a huge hint in my first post. DivX isn't exactly "commercial."
Neither is x265.

It's possible MainConcept will license h.265 at some point in the future, That's when we may see it in Vegas.

Really, this is a nondiscussion. Test x265 in Handbrake, see if you think it's ready for primetime speedwise, and post back. Please.

h.265 won't be needed for distribution until the 4k bluray spec gets finalized, and players hit the market, probably late 2015.

so there is no need for handbrake h.265 encoding anytime soon.

unless... maybe handbrake has to be used for encoding h.265 to an intermediate codec, so vegas can edit it? not this again...

i'll recap the issue as simply as i can:

1)a new 4k video camera just hit the market.
2)it records 4k video in the h.265 codec.
3)download the sample video, try dropping it into your vegas timeline... please.
4)my vegas pro 12 install doesn't recognize it, and refuses to open it.
5)what are you going to do if a client brings you h.265 video to edit? or you buy an nx1?

I'll let you know what I am going to do when it happens.

I see Mainconcept is deploying HEVC (including DivX), so maybe we'll see it in Vegas sooner than later.
Best.

mainconcept has an h.265 sdk available: http://www.mainconcept.com/products/sdks/codec-sdk/video/h265hevc.html

hey sony... where is the support for h.265?
musicvid10 wrote on 11/18/2014, 9:06 PM
Well, you won't see it in Vegas 12.
:?o
