H.265 Video Playback Issues After Rendering From Vegas 14

RichJ80 wrote on 12/6/2016, 3:44 AM

Hi Everyone,

With Vegas Pro 13 I always rendered out to an mp4 in 4k. Main issue was the file sizes so I was pleased to hear about v14 supporting H.265. Over the weekend I tried out my first render to 4k H.265 only to find that they do not play back on TVs properly :-(

The file was encoded out to the 40mbs preset, placed on a usb sitck and played back on the TV with poor results. The quality is great but something very odd is up with the actual playback. I have included a quick link to a recording i placed on youtube of the issue -

I am at a loss as to what to do or try as the options in the codec are limited so any help at all is appreciated to try to get this to work.

Thanks.

Richard.

** Update **

What I have just found when playing the file back on a computer it is exactly the same as on the TV but when there is a transition such as a crossfade it plays back perfectly. As soon as the transition ends it the goes back to the broken playback :-( I will do a test later with just one clip, another with the clips side by side and no transition and try again with the transition, see what happens. Quite odd.

Hi RichJ80,

I have also had problems with finicky tv playback, but oddly enough NOT with HEVC files from Vegas 14 - they play absolutely fine (and look great) on my Samsung UHD TV.  So there is hope :)

Is this maybe a bitrate issue?  Perhaps try some lower bitrate/resolution options to see if you can get something HEVC encoded to work. Also, perhaps try  a different USB stick or better yet a USB 3 portable hard drive.

Thanks for the reply. I have the same issue playing back on my computer at home so do no think it is specific to the TV. The transitions are fine but everything else flickers ( tested now on two computers and one TV). May I ask what settings you use for your HEVC files, thanks.

Intel HEVC  3840 x 2160 24P 40Mbps.     Footage typically from GH4 4k DCI 24p files.  Other templates work fine too, as do gopro footage and stills.

PS  No gpu acceleration available (using AMD 290x)

A bit more seraching and and also found out there has since been a new build to Vegas Pro so got updated to that (shame I didnt get an email about it). Tried out HEVC again with previous ettings and the setting you mentioned and they all now play back fine. Chrs for the advice.

You mentioned you have other files which dont play back ok. Which ones are these, I wouldnt mind giving them a try to see if I have the same problem.

So, a lot of the problems I was having with TV playback stemmed from using an older version of TwonkyMedia server, but even then it was really encodes from DaVinci Resolve and Gopro studio that didn't work.   May also have had some trouble with Sony AVC encodes out of Vegas (don't remember precisely), but really the Mainconcept h.264 files are usually fine.  Ocasionally, mainconcept encodes will add black frames, which is why I like the HEVC encoder - it seems quite reliable to me, although slow.
