I tried to render using the MainConcept encoder in Vegas 7, and it only gave me options of 320 x 240 or, if I go into Custom, the other option of NTSC Square Pixel 640 x 480. is there a way to get other frame size options such as 720 x 480, 24p, HD?
Also, is the H.264 codec used in Vegas 7 the same MainConcept encoder as used in QuickTime 7 or at least the same quality? I've previously rendered files with QT 7, and they seem smoother than mpeg-2 files.
You can manually enter in any resolution you like for the MainConcept encoder, although I think it does have to be a multiple of 16. I just did a Mainconcept AVC/AAC encode with 864x480 resolution at 2 Mbit/sec (downconverted from 1080i) and it looked quite nice. (That is an approximation to a square-pixel 16x9 image, with both X & Y dimensions being multiples of 16).
For Mpeg-4 web video it is my understanding that for high quality broadband it is recommended that it be delivered at 480 x 360 at 672 kbps. That will result in an estimated filesize of 25 MB for each 5 minutes of video.
