Hanging in there!

Vegas still hanging, and hour glassing, after returning from a six hour sojourn to the airport and back.
Media off line says everything.
Maybe a swan dive off the nearest skyscraper is the solution!!! LOL.
If you don't laugh, you'll cry.
Methinks it be time to say bye bye Sony, much as I hate the prospect of cramming another NLE process into the crowded space behind my old eyes.
Started with version 3, and Sound Forge before that.
Old faithful has become old PITA.

Is the media on an external drive? If so maybe a throughput problem.

How long since you did a clean install of Windows (or a restore of a virginal system-only backup) and reinstall of trustworthy must-have applications?

I find that eventually Win XP gets clogged up with uninstall rubbish, corrupted files and/or conflicting DLLs or drivers, and starts to misbehave.

Do a backup of your existing system disk/partition and restore a system image from halcyon days, if you have one, otherwise start from scratch after a reformat and make sure you do save a backup image this time. Using the latest device drivers is also a good idea. Then install Vegas and see if the problem still exists. I would be most surprised if it does.

If the problem has gone away, install your must-have trustworthy apps in priority order and make image backups from time to time as you go. Then, next time the gremlins get you, it will be relatively easy to wind back the clock to when life was worth living.

By the way, it is a good idea to keep your system disk/partition as free of data as practicable to keep the image size small and simplify restoring the data, such as documents, email, web markers, etc.

And one final thing. I have wasted much time over the years fiddling around with registry cleaners and reinstalling troublesome apps, trying to avoid biting the bullet and doing a full system restore. It never worked.
