Hard Drive RPM

At home I use VV3 on a Dell P2 with a couple of SCSI drives (a Maxtor and a Quantum Fireball) which may or may not spin at 7200 RPM as suggested in VV3 system reqs. The system works great. Now, I'd like to buy a newer, lower end laptop so I can edit on the road when I feel like it, but most drives on older Dell CPXs or Toshiba S103s spin at 4500 or thereabouts, as far as I can tell. Is anybody editing on a laptop with a hard drive that spins at less than 7200? How do you feel about it? (VV3 tech support suggested I pose this question on the forum).

I couldn't be happier with the performance of VV3 on my old desktop, but I fear buying a lower end laptop may be a waste of money. Yes, yes, I could buy a higher end laptop, but it would be an under-utilized asset and I don't need any more of those.

Any personal experience info along this line would be much appreciated.

My expereinces is hard drive RPM doesn't matter at all. I have lots of drives I shuffle in and out of drawers and some are 7200, others 5400 and I see no difference. What is perhaps more imporant is the drive fairly speedly like a Ultra 66/100/133?

Editing wise, a slower PC isn't really that much a problem. It is the rendering times that would be a major pain. The faster the CPU, the shorter the render times.

BillyBoy, in your experience what type of render times can one expect with the faster CPU values? What could one expect from say - 1.0gh to say 2.0gh or higher? Does the render time come down by a factor of 0.5 or what? I'm considering upgrading and would like to have some knowledge on this.

Thanks in advance

You may get more reliable captures with 7200, but the actual editing shouldn't make too much difference.

The rpm isn't too much of an issue on hd's, it's the reading speed which is more important. I've got 5400 and 7200 and they work fine. I've just changed my CPU from max wattage output of 165 to 225 since adding an external hd and dvd rom and everything's hunkydory.
