hard drive unreadable

does anybody have any idea what causes a hard drive to become unreadable? when i click on the HD i get "the file directory is corrupted or unreadable" this is the 3rd time in a 8months. all 3 times i'm editing
in vegas and it freezes ! when i restart- the drives i had been editng clips with are gone ! all 3 times it takes out 2 80gig drives - and these are select edited clips as in they were cut from 40hrs down to 11 hr ...
disk check & defrag will not work ..win 2K says the drives are heathly.

i'm using win2K ! 933PIII , 512 ram , 4 internal 80 gigs (3 are on ATA 100 pci card ) , 2-80gig firewire drives ...

i have never had this problem with win 95 using premiere w/AV master or on win 98se using raptor with premiere !! and premiere lock up every time i edited !! HD's were always there on restart - never lost data !

So is this a win2K problem ? software problem ?

how about getting vegas capture to be able to save a file on the way you captured ! then i could re capture the exact clips and then all my VEG files would work ! and i could re-assemble the edits !!!

any suggestions besides use win95 with av master ?

As a side note (and kind of after the fact), you may want to look at a product call DriveImage from PowerQuest. Its a fantastic tool for making backups of entire disk partitions. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I just thought I you might be interested in it.
