HD and DVDA

Hi again,

I'm working on a project as I speak, and it came across my mind what if?

What if I take a video which is about 5gig in size and re-render it with a higher bit rate say instead of it's 2mbit to say 4mbit or higher. Will it improve the video output or will it remain the same just a bigger file?

I think I'm full of it but thought I'd ask. HD kinda depends not only on you ability to view it in HD but the video itself has to be filmed in HD for that to work if I'm correct?

If it is possible then will DVDA handle the re-rendering or would I need to edit it in vegas?

Hi Brad,

I have found Vegas to be much better at rendering and faster than DVDA, so I always send it a compliant file.

If you up the bit rate you should get better quality. You should also get better quality if you perform a two-pass render. It's of course a trade off, better quality, bigger file, less play time will fit on a disc. How much better it looks will depend on the original, your player and TV combo.

Yes, you are correct, shoot it in HD, process it in HD, view it in HD.

Best Regards.......George

Re-rendering to a higher bitrate will not improve the video. At best it will be the same, but the re-rendering itself will cause some quality loss.

Increasing either the resolution or bitrate will not improve your movie.
All you are doing is adding air.

The BluRay player will do a much better job of upscaling for big screen viewing than any software solution.
Hope this helps.

Yes, re-rendering will always degrade. If you re-render to a higher bit rate, the degradation may not be obvious, but it certainly won't improve it.

You can always fiddle with sharpening and noise reduction, whether you re-render or not, which may give a more pleasing result if you are not too heavy handed, but not everyone would agree on the optimum amount.

Two old family sayings come to mind, one from Grandpa and Grandma, respectively.
1. "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear."
2. "You can't unbake a cake."
