HD DVD burners are not out yet. They are expected on or about August of this year. But you can make what is called hybrid hd dvd's now for use in the toshiba player. They're hd dvd's placed on normal dvd media by a normal burner. A double layer disk will get you about 40 minutes at full bitrate.
I expect HD-DVD prices to plummet as BlueRay wins the HD disc war. (flame suit on, but yeah, that's what I believe)
They don't have to plummet... Toshiba has constantly and consistently undercut blu ray from the beginning. Wal mart has also announce that they will start purchasing and selling a new toshiba player for $199. Samsung has also announced that it will start producing a dual player machine.
If prices need to plummet, then it will have to be done on the blu ray end of things.... because those are the only high prices left.

Which is unlikely due to the volume patents royalty payments for Blu-Ray DVD's. Every patent holder wants their pennies per disc.
According to the International Recording Media Association (IRMA), the CD has only about ten patents with a total royalty per disc of less than 5-cents. The DVD has about 100 patents with a total royalty of less than 25-cents per disc. The Blu-Ray DVD has over a thousand patents that get royalties per disc. Currently around $12 total per disc.
You won't see Blu-Ray disc prices coming down for a long, long time.
BD 50GB write disks at the local Sony store are $49.99.
As much as I hate Pinnacle, I may check out V11 for $50 and install it on my 7yo son's PC. So it doesn't damage my good machines! I need to experiment more. V11 can create HD DVD compatible disks using existing -+R DVDs.

Actually the present version. 10.7 can do this... does it well too.. But you may as well wait for V11. It flies under that Avid flag and MAY be a bit more stable.
There is also Ulead movie factory 6 that does hybrid hd dvd's, but I have even LESS confidence in the lower end ulead products.
If that is true, I'll never sell an HD disc to the market I often sell to (school plays, sporting events, etc.). These people sometimes grumble when I sell discs for $10 (I usually charge $20). Can you imagine what it would be like if I asked for $50? I'll get zero takers.
That's for the 50 gig double layer disks. The 25gig are a LITTLE more reasonable... something on the order of $20. That's still a lot for a disk though. Although the hd dvd burners are not quite out yet, their 15gig disks are a few bucks cheaper than BD. They do have a 51gig disk out but I'm not sure of its cost.
With the hybrid hd dvd's you can get 40 minutes on a DL disk... 50 (with DD5.1 sound) minutes if you drop the bitrate just a little.... that's good enough for most smaller applications. The cost of a verbatim DVD9 is something like2 or 3 bucks. Even if you have to split the project onto 2 disks and provide a double disk case, it's still more economical. I find that people need a break after 45 minutes or so anyway.
