HD vs AVI file size

Why is it that a half hour of an AVI file is about 6 GB's of information, while a half hour of .MTS (HD files) are not even 2 GB? This might have a logical answer, so sorry if I'm asking the obviouse, but some of the HD files that I've seen are not that big?

Any info would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Time x Bitrate = File Size

MTS uses the H.264 codec which is MUCH more efficient and therefore can deliver higher quality in a smaller package.

Also, I'm assuming that you're speaking of DV avi. (AVI is actually a container which can be different things).
