I just read about using gearshift to edit with proxy DV files. Would it work with Vegas 5.0? If not, what alternatives do I have...?

Also, would I need a card to capture the HD footage?

bump...I was hoping to be able to make a decision on purchasing the fx7 and was wondering if I need to purchase a capture card and/or update my vegas version to work with gearshift. Thanks for your help :)

So do you mean that it's technically not possible to edit HD with 5.0 at all or that it makes sense to upgrade to a newer version because of added functionality?

I don't do a lot of editing and just happen to be editing one short that came across my way...I'd like to stay with 5.0 unless editing HD with it is just not going to be feasible. Or, unless, upgrading to a newer version isn't as expensive as it appears to be on Sony's Vegas upgrade site:

According to your post, it's not a one-time gig. You're considering buying the FX7. You REALLY need to upgrade, both your app and your system (I'd be guessing) to work in HDV.

Well, I'm buying the FX7 just for this short film and am planning to sell it after the shoot. Given the number of days I'll be shooting, it would work out cheaper to buy/sell rather than rent.

I built an i7 system a few months ago on which I plan to be editing. Are there ways to buy an upgraded version without having to upgrade through the official Vegas site? $235 seems a bit excessive for my limited budget.

Also, if/when I upgrade, what's the typical workflow? Use gearshift to edit DV proxy files? Would I be needing a capture card? Thanks!

If you've neither shot nor edited HDV, regardless of the output, I would suggest you reconsider.

But that's just one person's opinion.

It makes no sense whatsoever to try to edit HDV with Vegas 5. If you can afford to purchase an FX7, you can afford the upgrade.

If you don't want to spend the full money for an upgrade to a current version of Vegas, then why don't you simply go to eBay and purchase an earlier version? Here's a link to an auction for Vegas 7:

At the time I posted, the auction was at $36.

I use 7.0d as my main editing platform, and it does just fine with HDV.

I often purchase software on eBay that is one or two revisions earlier than the current version. This really works well now that so many companies are adding such small increments to their products. While I am sad at the amazing lack of creativity and innovation in my old industry, it does create this side benefit that you can get 95% of the features for about 5% of the price by purchasing a version that is a couple of releases out of date.
