HDR-FX1

Hey everyone!
I have a question and I hope this does not come across as dumb. Be kind to me as I am a newbie to all this. I have an HDR-FX1. Most of the time I do my vids in the sd format. After all my reading and watching videos ( like the D-Juice vids) I see that a person can shoot HDV and edit then burn it to a regular Sd DVD and the quality is better. Now I shot some HDV video and just out of curiosity I plugged my camera into my TV which is a regular TV no HD, and I can veiw this video. I may be wrong but I thought that if it was HD you could not view it on a regular TV. If I am not supposed to see this HDV video on the regular TV then I have set up my camera wrong. Now I did read the manuel and thought I had everything set the way it is supposed to be. Can someone be so kind as to explain how this is supposed to work and perhaps if I am doing something wrong just take a big stick and whack me with it. Any imput would be greatly appreciated

Yes, you can view your HDV footage on a standard SD monitor, but understand that you're only seeing 480 lines of resolution as you're basically downconverting to SD resolution. Your camera is not set up incorrectly, however if you hook it up to an HD television using the digital component cable, you'll see how HD is supposed to be resolved, which is 1080i

I personally don't have an HD card in my machine so I monitor out to a high rez SD monitor - since 95% of my work thus far ends up mastered to SD, I'm viewing it as I need to.

Everything is good, sure nice to not HAVE to buy an HD monitor just to view the output from you cam, eh?

Ok get it Thanks a lot Cheno that opens my eyes for me. I just heard somewhere that you could not view HD on a regular tv, now I have somthing to look for by hooking up my cam to an HD tv so I can see what it can really do. And yes it is nice just to be able to view my output on a regular monitor.

Again thanks for the insight I am very grateful

The Kid,

Just so you know, at least one of the veteran members here has or has had an HDR-FX1 in case you run into questions about working with footage from it in Vegas, etc. Her name is Serena (do a member name search to find her here).
