HDR-FX1 sound level indicator

I know this is not a software question, but I am not sure where else to get an answer.

Page 21 of my HDR-FX1 manual shows a sound level indicator in the lower right corner of the viewfinder screen. My viewfinder does not show this indicator and I have not been able to find a way of turning it on via the menu items described in the manual.

I called Sony and was told, following a rather lengthy discussion, that the feature did not in fact exist (implying that the manual was in error). I find this hard to believe as it would certainly be a nice feature to be able to visually monitor the volume level at least prior to and possibly also during recording, particularly if you are in manual mode. Thus I would consider it a substantial oversight if Sony were not to provide this feature.

Some of you have the HDR-FX1. Can you confirm for me that you have or do not have this indicator?

On my VX2000/PD170 the sound level indicator only comes up when you have the audio set on manual control. I suspect it is the same for the FX1.

Liam,

You are correct! Thank you very much.

That's indeed the case - audio level indicators only show up when you switch to manual. Too bad - I would have liked them visible all the time (my Canon XM2 does that...).
Alternatively you could press Status Check and go to the last page. However that will bring up a lot of other stuff as well.

Actually, on the PD170 the audio level meter can be turned on even in AGC mode by pressing the "audio level" button. It is then displayed in the middle of the screen, rather than the bottom right.

I was able to get the audio meters to show up (big and center screen, kind of in the way) by pressing status check while recording. In auto level mode.
