HDV capture "Unloaded"/ Flash codecs

Newbie begs for pity! ; )

DV transfer no problem. HDV transfer from HC3 comes up with "Unloaded" message on preview screen. I think it has something to do with drivers but I can't figure it out.

Once I can dump HDV file on to my workstation I would like to do proxy editing because my computer is only a P4 3 gHz, 2k ram, ide.
How do I proxy edit?

I would like to edit and archive my files in HD and for the time being downconvert to Flash for web publishing. I tried a cheap Flash codec last night and it looked horrible, more than likely pilot error or not?

What is my best bet for quality results with this workflow situation?

Capture HDV -> proxy edit --> render and dump to what format?-->Whats the cleanest way (codec, settings and all) to convert to Flash.

Thank you!

Proxy (DV-size copy of m2t) is very quick, but you need to "replace" the proxy with the original m2t prior to final rendering.

I'm more and more convinced that the Cineform 1080i intermediate is the best way to go. Full-size frames, timeline editing is very nice speed wise (I have a P4 3.2Ghz). The quality is so good, you don't necessarily need to swap back to the original m2t unless you want to (I do sometimes, use to all the time).

My default project setting is HDV 1080 60i, best, blended, and always use this when I have HDV source footage. My first step is to load the m2t on the timeline, create an HDV avi, 1080 60i template (this selects the cineform). Then I use the avi on the timeline instead of the m2t. I use longer m2t (I don't spit on scene changes), so if you have 50 m2ts, then you have to weigh whether to create 50 intermediates, or one big one.

Final renders are to the desired format/settings without changing any project properties. Always use Best when downsizing to smaller size frame. If footage is fast-moving, and I am outputing to progressive (wmv or progressive avi/mpg), then changing the project deinterlace properties to interpolated seems to help.

Also as far as capture goes make sure you have selected the "Internal Capture" application and not the standard "
Vid Cap" you use when capturing DV.

How do I obtain and use this program? Vegas will recognize these files?

Any idea on the "unloaded" message on the preview screen?

Internal is set.

Camrera Ilink isn't converting to DV.

Turn of camera, preview windows says "device not connected"

Turn camera back on, preview window says "unloaded"

hit play on camera, no picture. Play button on transport does not engage

Are you using XP with ServicePack2? If so, then the necessary HDV drivers are already installed.

If not, you need to be using XP or XP with SP1. Take a look here to find out how to install the necessary HDV drivers. (scroll down to the riredale post there).

I'd also strongly recommend using a free utility called "HDVSplit" to capture your HDV footage, simply because it can split and label your shots with the date and time of shooting. Makes it very easy to keep track of things (for me, anyway).

Yes. I am begining to think they did not load properly.

I tried HDV split but it did not want to install because something was missing. I can't recall, but I will try again.

Does this mean I have to reinstall XP pro again? Or should I reinstall Vegas again?

If I remember correctly I checked the properties of the capture and it listed the HC3 but showed some sort of problem. aghhhhhh!

Update. Mpeg 2 decoder was not installed and thus the "unloaded" message on the capture screen.

Cure:

1) Save a small file in Mpeg 2. If your codec was not installed during your initial installation a dialog box will come up in order to registar your mpeg 2 codec. Once registared close "save as" portion of program.

2) Start capturing in HD! "Unloaded" dialog no longer a factor.
