HDV Codec for Virtual Dub

backlit wrote on 11/29/2007, 8:56 AM
I've been using the Deshaker script a lot lately. (Thanks John!) I shoot underwater video and it really simplifies my workflow, not to mention makes my hand held video look so much better. The problem I have is that Deshaker renders HDV out as uncompressed AVI which creates HUGE files. This is a problem that has been discussed before but seems to be corrected with instructing Deshaker to use Cineform's codec. Is there an alternative codec Deshaker would use that costs less than the Cineform codec ($249). I don't charge much for the vacation videos and don't have the budget to purchase this codec simply to Deshake. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

Take a look at this thread. You may find some answers there:

HuffYUV but use version 2.1.1, not the most recent.

Lossless compression and free. Still huge files, but I seem to average about 1/5 the size of uncompressed.

Thanks for your suggestions and directions... now I need to go back to the thread on how to modify the deshaker script...

Thanks again...

I have Neo HDV and at this point all I use it for is for deshaking video with the JM deshaker script. Yeah it is expensive. I still feel that it is worth it though. The deshaken Cineform footage is not only smaller than uncompressed, but it also smart-renders quickly into Cineform masters.

Another way to do this is to use the http://www.pegasusimaging.com/picvideospecial.htmPicVideo MJPEG codec[/link] at the highest quality. That will look very good at a size similar to Cineform but it won't smart-render into your finished master.

Lawrence,
Thanks for the info but sadly I can't afford the 250 right now. 28 for the PicVideo codec I can swing. Could you mail me your modified deshaker script that uses the PicVideo codec? I could probably figure out how to modify it myself but if you already have it done and have the time... it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

David
