HDV Headache

I just got a new Sony HDR-HC3 1080i camcorder. I captured the tape that I recorded and was going to start to editing the video but the video was coming out looking like a stop-motion animation but the sound was fine. I updated my VMS verison to 6.0b but it's still doing the samething. Do I need to get a MPEG2 plug-in or is there a setting that I need to adjust?

I tried playing the m2t file using the VLC player and that came out fine I even rendered 10 seconds of the video to a mov file and that came out fine but I just can get VMS to play it. I also when into the project settings and set it to HDV 1080i-60i and all that did was squish the video in the preview screen.

Also how do you rendering the file so that when you play the rendered file the "frame" of the movie player is in 'widescreen' so that there is no black bars on the top and bottom

#1 Are you using Platinum?

#2 You said "Also how do you rendering the file so that when you play the rendered file the "frame" of the movie player is in 'widescreen' so that there is no black bars on the top and bottom"

I don't understand; if there are no black bars, it's fullscreen.

Oobedoob,
The stop-motion animation you are referring to, are you talking about the preview window? This will often be the case, depending on the horsepower of your PC, available resources, tasks running in the background, etc. You can improve the playback by clicking the box right above the window and changing the preview window quality to one of the draft settings. Just be aware that this lowers your resolution, so the edges of your text may appear jagged. Even if your PC is not capable of producing smooth playback or high res in the preview window, this is NOT indicative of the quality of your finished product. As you've already seen with your test with the .mov file, the finished video will be smooth and at the resolution you have chosen. HTH

For 16:9 projects, make sure you have set the project to wdiescreen.

Click on FILE / Properties
On the Video Tab, select NTSC DV WIDESCREEN for the Template.

The preview will look squished.

Then when you are ready for OUTPUT. Make sure you have chosen the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template again.

Also unless you render to HD WMV or HD DivX, all other output is standard definition. I'm not sure if Quicktime has a HD output. Most likely there is. I'm not sure if Sony Vegas even supports the HD output formats.

I dont think your info is correct. If hes capturing HD video, he needs to pick the 1080i-60 option, which is 1:333, NOT the NTSC DV Widescreen option.

gbrandon is correct. The template you choose is "HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29.970 fps)". Second, if you want your preview window to have the correct aspect ratio (something I just learned) you need to do this. Highlight the "Copy Snapshot to Clipboard" icon--the one just left of the floppy disc icon. Then right click and select "Simulate Device Aspect Ratio". At that point, your preview will be 16:9 and not "squished". To me, the location of this option makes no sense, but at least it's there. For the last six months, I lived with the "squished" preview. And finally, unless you have a fast machine, the preview will look choppy. Again, it's the rendered product that matters. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You can do the right click anywhere on the preview screen or the bar above it to set aspect ratio. Location makes better sense then.
I use a P4 3.0GHz with 1GB RAM and have used both Nvidia 5200 and 6600GT graphics cards on best without a problem playing video with a second display on mirror as well. I don't think less would be good for HDV.
HDD is WD 7200rpm.
