HDV Project templates...

Howdy...

I have a Sony HDV Z1.

I'm wondering why there are 2 resolution templates for HDV, and which I should use. There's a setting for 1440x1080, and another for 1920x1080 (this is in project settings).

I know the camera captures at 1440, but does a 'pixel shift' or something to make it 1920, right? Can someone explain which project settings I should use?

Thanks,

Ben

If you are using the footage from your Z1 ,the short and simple answer is use the HDV 1440 template. Most of us, shooting HDV are using the Cineform intermeadiate files wich are the same PAR frames size as the orig M2t's . You can convert in Vegas directly with the cineform codec in Vegas or using Connect HD.
Do a search here regarding the difference , if you dont already know.

but bottom line for most workflows that is the template you will use.

I am using Cineform. Thanks.

When would one use the 1920 preset? Would I ever use that with the Z1?

Thanks,

Ben

I think the 1920 is for when you're going out HD via a Decklink card or simillar.

In addition to selecting 1440, you should make certain that you are rendering at the correct PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio). For the Z1 camera, PAR = 1.33. This setting can be found in the "custom" dialog in the "render as" dialog.

With the correct PAR your render will fill the screen on a 16x9 television. If you chose the wrong PAR, you'll get stretched video and empty bars on the screen.

I figured this out when I was rendering WMV-HD to play back on my IoData Avel LinkPlayer2 (which allows me to watch HD videos on my TV).
