Yes, edit as HDV, render as SD widescreen

There is one small gotcha. DV Widescreen and HDV Widescreen are not the same aspect ratio so you will see slight black bars on either side of a DV Widscreen file that was rendered from an HDV project.

Two other things not mentioned.
For best results:
1) You need to render at Best.
2) If the footage is interlaced you do need to specify a Deinterlace Method in project properties.

which is, I'm guessing, why they added the functionality of the stretch to fill screen option in the rendering (though, the only time I ever use it is when it's going for a 4:3 WMV (not often these days).

This means set it to "Blend" in the project properties correct? I am thinking of shooting footage in 1080i...

Also, is there really a difference between aspect ratios from 1080i HDV to Widescreen SD? If so, why is that the case?

It's just simple math:

HD is 1920 x 1080 with a PAR of 1.000.
1920 * 1.000 = 1920
1920 / 16 = 120
1080 / 120 = 9
1920 x 1080 has a ratio of 16 to 9 (16:9)

DV Widescreen is 720 x 480 with a PAR of 1.2121.
720 * 1.2121 = 872.712
872.712 / 16 = 54.5445
480 / 54.5445 = 8.8
720x480 PAR 1.2121 has a ratio of 16 to 8.8 (16:8.8)

So at 16:8.8, DV Widescreen is almost... but not quite... 16:9. Conversely it could also be expressed at 16.36:9 which is actually a bit wider than 16:9 which is why placing HD in a DV Widescreen project leaves black bars on the sides (HD is not as wide).
