HDV VideoCapture Problem 8.1

JackyBoy wrote on 12/22/2008, 12:45 AM
Got a new PC with 64-bit Vista and installed 8.0c and 8.1.
Video capture with a SD device works ok with both versions.
With my Z1 however, the capture of HDV is fine with 8.0c but with 8.1 the preview window (in the capture window) has the message "Video Preview Unavailable" and I can't see any picture. I hear the sound however and the control buttons (play, stop, rewind etc) work ok.
Anyone else have this problem (and found a solution) or is it one for Sony support?

Known issue with Vegas Pro 8.1. If you need preview during capture and still have 8.0c installed, recommend using that for now.

It seems that both 8.0c and 8.1 have still various problems in capturing HVD material.

I am still suffering (in 8.0c) from the problem that the end of the clips is not properly detected during capture.

I am capturing from a Sony HC1E handycam (PAL) using 8.0c's own capture:

- every clip lacks audio in the last 6 frames
- every clip has a problem with the last one or two frames (belongs to the next clip)

Shame on you SCS - this problem has been known for a long time, and has been reported a zillion times.

How this issue has been handled (in other words - not at all) is not very professional. I am loosing lots of time, just today I manually corrected over 1000 clips - that othervice could have been used as is! I lost more than 2 hours in this process, during wich I used some bad words that cannot be reproduced here...

So my questions are:

1. To SCS - are you going to repair this or not?
2. To everyone else - does such a script exist that shortens all selected clips on the time-line from the end a fixed number (6) of frames?
3. If not - would someone skilled in scripts save the world (and my nerves), and be so kind to write one?

I tried to search for such a script but with no result. HDV split is not an option for me. Such a script would save SCS's ass for now...

Cheers,

Christian

I'm a solid Vegas supporter, but of that I will cleanly agree. Vegas HDV capture is both weak and buggy. I use HDVsplit... a freeware program that appears to have it together better than Vegas.... more options as well.

Hi Blink,

I am also a solid Vegas supporter, I just love this editor, it provides intuitive, snappy and nice editing... I would not die for it, but I love using it...

However, there are severe shortcomings, or should I say - serious BUGS - that still must be ironed out from the software, to really fully earn the "Pro" tag...

Maybe Vegas is already Pro, but the people at SCS are not, if they repeatedly ignore known bugs and do nothing about them... HDV capture is a good example, time has stood still here for a long time... Come on SCS, there are LOTS of HVD material, please do not put all your eggs in the AVCDH basket !!!!

I just wonder if SCS does take this "Pro" application seriously enough. What I mean is, not only ADDING new nice features, but also REPAIRING things that have been broken for a long time... Albeit it is easier to attract new users with new fancy features, but to keep the old users from looking at the other side of the fence, they should really fix the known bugs... Its a continuous frustration...

Should we put somewhere together a list of known and easily reproducible errors, for SCS to crunch on... I still would like to see (as many many others) a sticky with known problems and their workarounds... It would save tremendeous time for new adopters, and also be useful for old farts like us...

Probably I should try to write such a script myself (cutting 6 frames from all selected clips on the timeline), should not be a big thing using an existing similar script as a template... I have done some programming so should not be too complicated to do. But again, I would prefer to use my time for editing, not building workarounds for known problems...

The design flaw has existed since before HDV was invented.
The same issue is very likely why Vegas cannot handle native XDCAM EX either. Good luck getting the problem addressed.
Vegas cannot rejoin unclosed GOPs.

I have figured out the same problem. With 8.0c on Vista 32 bit no problems, 8.1 on Vista 64 bit "Video Preview unavailable".

Hope Sony will find a solution...

Well I guess I'm fortunate. I've never had a problem capturing HDV on my Sony HD-1000, whether it was shot from the HD-1000 or Z1.

Maybe it's just my workflow, but the fact that Vegas capture doesn't split exactly on the scene boundary hasn't affected me much. When shooting, I normally hit the record button early and let the tape roll a bit after the take is over. It is extremely rare that I use an entire clip from absolute beginning to the very end. I'm of the opinion that if a few frames at the end of a clip are that critical, then you've been a little too quick on the record/pause button.

And as far as v8.1 not being perfect; it's the first 64-bit release and no version 1.0 software is bug free. Secondly, SCS gave it to us for free, so I really can't complain too much.

I think the answer to the upcut at the end of a clip is to turn the scene detector off. For some reason, capturing in 8.1, the scene detector splits a scene for no reason at all and when you put it together with where it took up the take again, there is a loss of audio and words are cut off.

I do not have a problem if I capture in 8.0c and edit in 8.1.

Looks like this problem hasn't been addressed yet. I wanted to see if this bug had been corrected in the new release.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to video preview while capturing HDV in Vegas Pro 9 [64bit] with an XH A1
