Hello-noise-Robert. Microphone noise at pauses

I have not yet tried to narrate any videos on my Vegas 9.0 with a microphone. I did try narration on a PowerPoint 2007 slide show under Win7, and was surprised that each time I paused between words that a fairly loud hiss could be heard, and recorded. My microphone is probably 25 years old. Why the rush of noise? I suspect might expect the same behavior with Vegas. Is AGC trying to boost it. I do have a better microphone to try, which I will do in a few hours or maybe in the morning. Comments?

I suspect theres some AGC circuit at 'work' here; changing the microphone probably won't help - suspect it's your soundcard doing this.

The input gain is hitting the AGC threshold on the sound card, pretty hard. Turn it down.

The PC is a HP Pavilion desktop, model 6240f that I bought 16 months ago. Win 7. How does one turn down the threshold on the sound card? With software? The sound card is a high def Realtec.

I have a newer mike now that I bought last year. Logitec usb mounted on a stand with a mike that is somewhat like a curved pencil.I'm look at the Ctrl Panel Sound icon. It shows a Levels tab. It's set at about 1/2 the full range.

I can't really use it now. PPT broke as I was using it. I'll get back to this tomorrow. I need to do a little repair of the program file via the Ctrl Panel's Program and Features. This has happened before.

I decided to try Audacity. It all works find there with my USB mike. However, I need to re--submit my crash PPT problem, which had previously been repaired for the Slide Show narration. It seems now located in Insert-->Recording.
