HELP!!!!!

RevJonG wrote on 9/21/2007, 6:16 AM
On hold with sony tech support but no answer yet. Maybe some wisdom from here to get me out of a jam... PLEASE...

Had Vegas 7. Upgraded computer to vista (I know I know...)
Vegas would not start (Application failed to initialize)
Uninstalled and reinstalled... Several dll's "failed to register"

Used this as an excuse to upgrade....
Installed 8... same thing

The dll's all seem to be audio "stuff" (sfppack1.dll, sfppack2.dll, sfppack3.dll etc. etc. etc)

Please help!

Are you signed in as administrator? That could make all the difference in the world.

If Media Manager was installed under XP then go into Control Panel /Services and disable media manager.

I'd also try pulling out your sound card, and/or disbaling it in the bios if it's on-board.

If you have Vegas plugins that were installed seperately under XP and can be uninstalled from Control Panel, do that.
RevJonG wrote on 9/21/2007, 6:57 AM
It is a laptop... cannot pull the soundcard
I did just uninstall all plugins
Media manager is uninstalled and not running (I checked...)
tried but no Joy...

Thanks for the suggestions. Back on hold with sony so open to more ideas...

On my laptop the sfppack* dll's are located in the Program Files/Sony/Shared Plug-ins/Audio folder. Looks like they're also in the compressed cabs for Sound Forge, Vegas 7, and Vegas 8 on my laptop.

If I were you I'd uninstall all your Sony apps, reboot, remove all Sony directories including the Program Files/Shared ones and then reinstall Vegas.

Vista has a fairly detailed error log... see if you have any system errors logged.
RevJonG wrote on 9/21/2007, 4:31 PM
Tim,

Uninstalled everything, cleaned the registry and followed all sony's suggestions.
Still no joy...
Tried to register the dll's manually and they failed
Installed DVD Arch. 4.5 and it looked good (made it through the install with no errors) but it will not start either (app failed to initialize properly)

Thanks for your help... Sony said call back monday...
still open for ideas...

Checked under "manage computer" and it just echoed the same error messages:
Dll's failed to register and app failed to initialize properly..

Thank you for your suggestion though!

(Just in case ) Are you also running the install program as administrator - UAC (user account control) reduces rights of programs to stop the freedom of apps roaming about the system as a precaution - (right-click the installer and choose "run as adminstrator).

This may help it incase it's not registering due to a permission issue (which seems to be about themost common errors I'm seeing people encounter)

Thank you for your help but still no joy...
Maybe Sony can help on Monday... Not that I want to discourage any more ideas...

One crazy idea is to run Vegas in XP compatability mode ??
This makes no sense as VP8 surely runs under Vista ..
There's a reason those DLL's will not register.
Do they show up in the Shared Plug-in/Audio directory ?

Thanks for the ideas ...
I even uninstalled and tried to run the installer in compatibility mode but no joy.. Sony has yet to figure out why their "audio plugin dll's" won't register on install. Maybe Monday... I may need to abandon this upgrade and do a fresh install of windows then vegas... that would not be fun so I am still open to ideas!

Thanks all

Just bumping this up... Still no joy and no real response from sony. Open to ideas!

Thanks all

At first I could not get V8 to run in Vista either. I ended up reinstalling Vista... that for what ever reason cleared the problem. On the second reinstall, I noticed in "program features", the dot net 3 was defaulting turned off

Another couple of ideas that you could consider if you have not already done so, Sony may or may have not also suggested them

Now, since I have XP, not Vista (only worked on Vista when helping someone with setting up their new computer), you'll have to mentally translate the following for yourself into Vista-speak.

--- Once you clean out everything--including the Sony Program Files Vegas 8 folder, and if applicable, its Installation folder, reboot,

--- Open Task Manager and end all non-essential processes and background apps. Including and especially any security, anti-virus, etc. applications.

--- You could also go into Admin Services and see if there is anything on Automatic or Running that could be related to such apps. See if there is any Sony related stuff running in there too that could shorting out your install. But don't mess with the MS services, that can screw things up.

Then try installing again..

Use above suggestions at your discretion.

P.S.: More before-you-reinstall-again:

---- You may also be running into some sector corruption on your drive. Do a complete disk check with "fix errors," etc. as well.

---- Defragging too often can actually be harmful to a drive, but in such a case, it may be a good idea to do so in addition to the disk check.

Last, but not least, this may possibly be more related to your upgrade from XP to Vista than a Sony software installation: an OS issue.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your input... The problem is fixed!!
I tried to run another piece of software and it also crashed. I tried a "re-install" of that program and, much to my surprise, 3 out of 36 dll's would not install correctly. I did a backup and wipe the disk. A clean install of vista has cured all (so far)...

Thanks again for the quick responses

Glad to hear things worked out. Ain't it a relief? :)

Contingency Planning-Ahead Suggestion

Since you're at the "beginning" of all of this = new install, re-installing was not the most drastic or pain-in-the-buttocks thing to do. But as you customize your system, install programs, etc. such a move will become less attractive.

So in case you do not have such a program, do as I and others here do to save much time and hassle:

--- Get Acronis TrueImage drive backup/cloning software. Download the trial from the company site, then you can get version 10 at the second link below for $34 at NewEgg As stated more than once at this forum,

If needed and depending on system layout, one can backup and restore more than one image (drive or partition) at a time.

The new version is 11, the one at NewEgg is 10. I still have 9 and don't see any need to upgrade for I personally don't need the more or less minor new additions since my version.

I use it mainly for my OS and programs drive and since I have the drive space, I alternate between two backup folders so that I always have the just-before-last backup up too. My media, Vegas and video related files are on a separate drive and I usually backup files manually as I go.

But for the OS drive, TI is THE way to go. I do a backup usually every 5 days or so. It only takes about 20 minutes or so in my case -- that's fast). There are other programs like Ghost, which I used to have, but as I and others have discovered, TI is very solid, the fastest -- and easy to use.

I use the Acronis image tool, and it is simply great. I use it on all PC's. I make one image when I have installed OS with all drivers etc., and another when I have installed applications. In this way you can always get back to a "clean install" without apps. if ou want to install antoher version etc.

I'll second that acronis backup...
Although I don't use acronis, I use Drive image 7 (now ghost)
it works flawlessly and it's ridiculous how much time it will save you reinstalling your os and soft.

Heres one catch if you already don't do this.
Create a logical partition that holds all of your data files. Do not install anything to that drive

any other partitions should be primarys for boot and backup.

then you'll never lose your data as long as the logical does not literally die on you

Depending on which version of Vista you have - it has a good backup/restoreoption built in. I use it to back up the entire disk (2 OS's). And it's a quick restore from a blank vista install later to restore.

I'm also a fan of ghost/TI methodology, as you don't need to install a blank OS to restore, so that does save a few mins. But if you have a suitable version of Vista, you can save money if you want to.
