HELP! An Exception has occurred (again and again)!!

Hi everyone. I really need some assistance here!!! Beginning yesterday I had the old "An exception has occurred" error message while doing some intensive editing in a multitrack project (primarily editing volume envelopes). Today it happened twice (same project-song). I'm using Vegas 3.0a. My system is a dedicated DAW (only other programs installed are Acid 3.0 & Sound Forge 5.0 and of course I have some 3rd party plugins) but Vegas was the only program open when this occurred.

Here's my system:

Windows 98SE
AMD 1.33 Tbird CPU
Asus A7V266 motherboard
512 meg DDR ram
IBM (4.5 gig) 7200 SCSI system drive
IBM 7200 IDE 40 gig data drive
Layla 24 interface (latest drivers).

The exception error details reads as follows:

An Exception has occurred.
Details:
Vegas 3.0a (build 107)
Exception Ox C0000005 (access violation) READ: OxFFFFFFFF
IP: Ox47B2BD
In Module Vegas 30.EXE at address Ox400000+Ox7B2BD
Thread GUI ID=OxFFFC5961
Stack=OxE1F000-OxE20000

and of course there's the typical ton of additional data that I didn't copy here which hopefully isn't needed for someone to offer some assistance.
I'm right in the middle of a CD project with a client from overseas so I'm feeling desperate and VERY disappointed. ! Everything was operating perfectly till this! HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Here's an update. I tried reinstalling Vegas 3.0a but no fix. I discovered now that EVERY time I select the Envelope Edit Tool this error occurs. So it seems to be getting worse by the minute!! I can play the project fine. . . no problems that I can tell. I'd appreciate some suggestions ASAP. THANKS!!

Update #2: In other Vegas projects (songs) I can select the envelope edit tool and everything seems ok. No error messages (at least with this latest and quick check that I did on 2 other projects which included doing some envelope editing). In the project where the problem occurs, I discovered that I can continue editing envelopes if I DO NOT choose the envelope edit tool to do this. So could it be that I have a corrupted file or something in this particular project that is now connected to the edit tool? Weird. . .

I would love some help. . . from you too SoFo! ;-)

Thanks,

What plugins are you using in this project? I would expect a problem with a particular plugin, rather than an envelope. Also how many tracks are in your project and approximately how many events (ie how many splits).

Thanks for your post Rednroll.

Not many plugins as yet. Waves verb and delay on assignable bus (delay was muted when this happened) and some track eq. I use a lot of outboard gear for efx and processing. There's less than 20 tracks running. These are long (15 min) trance tracks (continuous events). Very few splits (4-5). I'll check on the plugin issue but I doubt its the amount of plugins I'm using. Perhaps a problem with one of them? I was able to run this kind of project with no problem on a much weaker system (PIII 450) late last year (although I did hit the wall occasionally). ;-) Thanks again.

That's a good test, start removing plugins. Just muting them, won't do the trick because they're still in the signal path of processing, just not making any sonic changes when you mute them. I've run into this problem in the past, where Sonic Foundry made an update, and then all of a sudden I would get consistent crashes due to an older plugin that I was using which was causing the problem. I would get a crash error similar to what you posted. If you find it is a particular plugin, it's a good idea to write sonic Foundry's tech support and inform them of which plugin and the version number, so they can fix the bug.

Actually I'm pretty sure I've located the problem and it does seem to be a corrupted file (track), or something similar, that's somehow tied to the volume envelope. I muted each track one at a time until I was able to isolate the crash being related to one track. When I deleted the volume envelope from this specific track, I could not reproduce the crash anymore. I haven't a clue why this occurred but I'd sure like to know how it happened! It makes me damned nervous! ;-) Anyway, everything has been running ok since I did this, and I've been pushing the system hard all day. However, I haven't yet experimented with inserting another volume envelope in that track. I had to move on to tracking other songs and will get back to this later. I'm still very much interested in anyone's input though!

Thanks,

Rednroll: I'd like to communicate with you about this off-forum. Some related issues have come up that I think you may be able to advise me on but the thread would probably go off topic. Thanks!
