HELP! AVI render, "pulsating" focus

Encountering something I've never seen before, and I've done many renders just like this. (First time in V8):

I have a sequence of nested veggies, each has photos and plain (Arial 18pt) text only.

In the "master" project, I place those veggies in a track over a mostly white / gray motion background.

I render to DV AVI.

It renders as expected (I think?)...the pics and text overlay the motion background.

But, on playback (at least on my computer via wmp, and also in vegas), the foreground elements' focus seems to "pulsate" from completely focused to slightly unfocused. The frequency of the oscillation seems to be a few seconds.

I've never seen anything like this in V7. Other .avi renders using V8 that contain mostly video have not exhibited this - event the title cards leading in that use the same motion background seem fine.

Is there something strange about overlaying photos on a motion background? Text also?

I've rendered to .avi using 8bit, 32bit, full-resolution set to good and best. None of these fixed the problem.

What bitrate, frame rate, and resolution are your WMV files? If you're using too low a bitrate for the frame data you can see this sort of thing happen. The I frames will look good, then the successive P and B frames will degrade until the next I frame comes along.

Oh my God! Not another production-stopping bug!

I am getting the same "pulsating" focus issue with my high school football videos. At first I thought it was my camcorder. Nope! The raw AVIs look fine.

Only after I encode my project to 8.5 mbps mpeg2 do I see the "pulsating" focus, and only on those clips where I use the velocity envelope at the 1.04 setting. Using Vegas 6,0d the project encodes just fine. Are you going to report this or am I?

I'm already working on the post-edit ripple bug.

I'm thinking it might be a nested .veg issue.

If I add my b&w motion background to my nested .veg (the one with the pics and text), and do a render of just that project, the pulsating focus disappears.

When I remove that background, and render from my master .veg (which includes the nested) with the motion background, I get the pulsating.

None of which happens with V7. I need to try to narrow a test case down to the most basic steps that reproduce this, but I just don't have the time right now.

Sheesh. This is a big project...due Dec 14. I feel your pain Marcus!

Yep, my project is due December 13th and it would take too much time to force feed through Vegas 6.0d so I am just going to have to forget the velocity envelope work altogether.

I have submitted the issue to techical support so let's see what happens. This is the second bug I have experienced, and I consider them internally huge issues. Vegas 6.0d was sooooooo stable. Everything worked every time.

Good luck!
