Help! Can't import DV video

I am helping my son do a video project that is due Monday. I have used VMSP6 for a while but am now getting an error when I try to capture video.
The error that comes up is "the device Microsoft DV camera & VCR could not be opened. Make sure that it is turned on and not being used by another app."
A while back I did install the 30 day version of Vegas 6 but have removed it thinking that it may have been causeing the conflict. However I still cannot import.
If I have VMSP6 closed and I hook up the camera Vegas starts yet when I try to capture the error still comes up. So it is seeing the camera yet something else is going wrong.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is wrong? I am getting desperate at this point!!

Thanks
Zack S

go to www.scenalyzer.com and download the trial version and see if it can see the camera and capture. If it can, consider spending the $39 to get it. It's got so many more features than VMS capture has, it's well worth the extra investment.

If scenalyzer can't capture, then you've got something else going on.

are you importing via the firewire?

if you are using firewire you might try this - start playing the tape
and then plug your firewire in. I know on my computer for some wierd reason I occasionally have to do this for it to lock in to the camera feed.

another option it so import using microsoft as an avi and then import it into VMS later.
