»Do I need to edit in 32-bit video mode to maintain that higher bit depth of R3D files?«

Yes, at least you have to switch to the float-point (32 bit) mode for the final render process then. Editing itself doesn't care too much.

roger, thanks!

One other thing I noticed in V15 documentation, there is something about Vegas saving some info in a new .rmd file with the r3d file, same directory, if you adjust red file properties. My concern is that if these .rmd files are not also backed up, then a copy of the veg file does not have all the info re work done on that project

quick update: I do understand that dropping ONE 8-bit plugin onto the 32-bit editing timeline NEGATES all the 32-bit goodness. But, honestly, pixel peeping hard on a calibrated 4k monitor, I see no visual loss just staying in 8-bit for all of it. Maybe Vegas only shows 8-bit in preview? Not a big deal. This is also a non-pro project, just for fun. AND I KNOW that is the wrong thinking for maintaining the highest amount of color in the clips, but it will suffice for me here.

not sure I saw a Vegas RMD file anywhere, but i can check tonight

Is your display capable of more than 8 bit?

that nasty gray area! Screen claims 30-bit for color, and 10-bit display but cheating that up from 8-bit algorithm? while NVIDIA allows "10 bpc" color depth, and I am using Display Port. My gut tells me, with all that, probably still only displaying 8-bit. :)

Yes, but what does the NVIDIA setup tell you?:

If the (highlighted) Output dynamic range is set to Full, and Output color depth is 10 bpc, it is displaying at 10 bpc (bits per channel). If it is set to 8 bpc, see if you can change it to 10 bpc.
