HELP - firewire drive and file system

tbwfilms wrote on 1/17/2003, 10:13 PM
I just bought a Wstern Digital external firewire drive (120GB) and by default, the file system is FAT32. Is this okay for capture/editing? Sorry - rookie here, and don't know much about this stuff, except I did hear that FAT32 was not the best.
If I do need to change it, how would I do so?

Thanks in advance for your help. This forum has been a life saver.

You want NTFS not FAT 32. Reformat the Firewire Hard drive but first, remove any files from it or you will lose them.

Actually you can change to NTFS from FAT#@ without out file loss, or needing to reformat at least on Windows XP, I forget about earlier versions. There is a slight risk you could lose data, but really very slight. If your version of Windows allows it, it gives how-to in its help system. Very simple process.

Marc,

As BillyBoy pointed out, you can convert Fat32 to NTFS in WIndows XP. You can also do this with Windows 2000. If you have Windows 98/Me or earlier, you are out of luck. They don't support NTFS.
