Help me understand audio device

Im going to show a bit of ignorance…but its all in the name of learning…

I don’t exactly understand what picking an audio device in the preferences does. For example, I have an audigy 2 (don’t get all crazy on me for having a creative card…its just what I have…) so, in my audio device list I have several choices (Microsoft sound mapper, direct sound surround mapper, windows classic wave driver, creative asio, sb audigy asio [df00])

When I pick a different device what is actually happening? Is vegas using a different driver to play audio? I guess im just wondering what is going on “under the hood” so to speak. All that said, how do you decide what device to use? (besides surround support).

Now, here is where it gets really confessing to me. If I pick creative asio or sb audigy asio [df00] I get a warning saying that the device does not support the current sample rate or bit depth. But this happens no matter what the sample rate and bit depth is. It seems like an audio device has to support some sample rate and bit depth…or its not a sound device.

I hope this question makes sense…

Thanks in advance for you willingness to set a beginner straight.

Ben

you have the devices clear in your mind i think.
the Bit depth thing always shows up until you go into Properties and change from 44,100 to 48,000, then select 16 or 24bit and then "BEST".
that works for me.

I had a SB audigy 2 that i used for things besides Vegas, and it did fine for playback. never tried recording with it. If you want a really nice sound card for multi tracking, i love my Echo layla, 8 in / 8 out. I have since taken out my SB audigy and pitched it.

thanks...at least i am on the right track...

at this point i dont do anything complicated enough (i never record really, and most of the adio i do is relativly simple) to need anything more than a card that plays things back, it seems like the SB works ok for that as long as you turn all the effects and junk off.

what is (or is there a place i can find out) the differences between the various devices that are avalible? (such as sound mapper, etc...)

thanks
