Help me with the Plug ins!

Hi,
I am a biginner, so please help me on this. I am confused abit how to use the plug ins. Can these be used while recording into the track itself or are they to be applied after recording and during playback, or both?

For instance, I noticed that there is about -60db floor noise on my tracks. I tried an experiment recording into the tract with just ambient noise and no other sound. I opened the track noise gate plug which by default comes up at threshold of -infi. As the recording progressed, I adjusted the threshold to -55db and after some seconds, stopped recording.

Now when I played back the track listening on the headphone, I noticed that the noise gate had not removed the ambient noise. Now during the playback, I again opened the plug in and tried the same experiment as above. This time it clearly showed that the noise was getting filtered when the threshold was increased above - 60 db.

This means the noise gate did not work during recording but it worked during play back.

Is the the way it supposed to be?

Thanks alot!

yes, it works on playback, not recording.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Could u please elaborate a little? I know I sound stupid.... just beginning...

If it works only with playback, why there are separate plug ins for the track and the bus to which I have routed the tracks?

Will the plug in effect be transferred to final track when I mix down and then to CD burning?

Thanks again

Yes. . . assuming you have everything eventually routed to the master buss.
