Help: message - "avi file are unsupported"

I rendering my 3 minute video as a avi file so I can export back to DV tape.
But when I try to send it back to DV tape I get a message that says: "The avi file(s) are unsupported."
The file is able to play in windows media player - I would think that this would indicate it is a avi file.
Is this problem related to codec. And if so how would I change this?
I'm using a Sony DCR-PC1 DV camera and Sony software to import & export DV footage called DV Gate Motion.
Thanks in advance for any help!

When you render the file, you need to use the DV .avi template (either NTSC or PAL, whichever is appropriate) in your area, and do not customize it at all. Use the default template with no changes. This is the only format that can be printed back to DV tape.

I used the DV .avi template with NTSC and I didnot customize & I used the default template but I still got the error message: "The avi file(s) are unsupported."

I finally got it to work by using the video capture software that came with Video factory.
But know when I send it out to the DV camera I'm getting a lot of "digital drop out"
Any way to eliminate this?
