Help -- MP4 rendering issue

speed66 wrote on 9/10/2009, 12:40 PM
I'm trying to render an AVI file (created in Sony) out to an MP4 file. It's about 20 minutes in length. I was able to create the AVI file with no issues. But getting it into MP4 has proven impossible so far. I've tried the Sony and MainConcept AVC/AAC codecs.

The audio (voice) is off slightly creating an unusable piece.

Any ideas? I've tried everything I can think of.

I've had similar mp4 lip-sync issues, especially when playing the movie in QuickTime (under Windows XP).

Try the free app Handbrake, it has some nice export options for that AVI you've already got.

Are you using VBR or two pass rendering? I've found that single pass CBR renders keep everything in sync and look just as good most of the time.

Thanks for the input.

I'm using the standard set up which is not two-pass rendering. It's amazing to me that this is an issue given the popularity of the MP4 format

I'll try playing the file in another environment. Maybe it is QT and my PC but I haven't had issues in the past.

Thanks for the tip on Handbrake.

The Quicktime Player is resource-intensive. Doesn't work right with h.264 .mp4 files on my dual core machine.

Try the free VLC player and see if you have the same issues. May not be Vegas' fault at all. I also use HandBrake a lot for encoding because it is faster than MainConcept and has better decomb / deinterlace options.

I've had a similar problem - slightly out of sync audio on the PC but when I load it to Vimeo or Youtube it's in sync again - not sure why.

Oh, so you thought the audio was out of sync because it seemed out of sync when you played it back with Quicktime. Yeah, chances are pretty good your mp4 clip is just fine. Quicktime isn't optimized for Windows systems at all. You'll be so much further ahead with VLC. You can get it http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.htmlhere.[/link]

The only reason I keep QT on my Vista system is so certain file types open in Vegas. For everything else (like .mp4 .m4v .mov playback), VLC is the answer for now.

I would certainly never trust QT to tell me if my audio was in sync -- it can't even keep up with my 3Mbs .m4v files, whether encoded in MC or HB or whatever . . .

BTW, if anyone's really interested in this stuff, there is now an easy way to import and edit Vegas chapters (markers) as well as DVD chapters from HandBrake to .m4v (.mp4) files for your iPod, iPhone, portable device, or computer playback.
