Help, Network Render Hangs Vegas

Downee wrote on 4/25/2004, 3:10 PM
I need to get a project done quick, and I was gambling on this new network render feature. At first I had trouble getting the paths right in the render clients, but now I know I have them set up properly because both computers complete segments on small test files. So now my problem is vegas hangs every time I try to render my actual project. Did somthing get corrupted perhapse?

Are you saying that, after attempting a net render, you can no longer
do "regular" renders on your project?

If you're only having problems with network renders, I would first
look to see if all machines have enough RAM. You can use the Windows
Task Manager to see if "PF Usage" exceeds total physical memory.

downee - i seem to be having the same problem as you. my vegas seems to hang when starting a network render. my vegas icons would go away and my CPU was low, like nothing was going on and vegas was hung. then, after several minutes, vegas would seem to wake up, start the second instance of vegas, and start network rendering with no problems.

for a 15 minutes project, vegas will act hung for 2-3 minutes. for a 90 minute project, it is probably 5-6 minutes or longer. try doing a network render again and wait a while to see if vegas finally responds like mine does.

i don't know why it takes so long. it would be nice for vegas to show a working dialog, instead of acting hung and not using any CPU for a long time.

I'm trying to track down this problem... how much RAM do you have?
Are you using any type of removable disks such as a CD, USB, or
Firewire drive?

SonyPJM - i don't know if your response was to me or the original poster, so i'll respond anyway. my CD-RW and DVD-RW drives are both internal. i do have a USB2 card reader (sandisk imagemate 8 in 1) that did have an xD-picture card in it when starting my network renders. i can try a network render w/o a card in it or the whole reader disconnected. i have no firewire drives and 1GB of memory.

Thanks for responding... I don't see any problems with your setup but
I think I may have found the problem... it appears that the default
settings for shared folders in XP produces very slow behavior when
Vegas attempts to access the shared files.

However, everything speeds up when I issue the following command (from
the command prompt, cmd):

net share <share name> /UNLIMITED

Give it a try and see if it fixes the problem. Replace the '<share
name>' part with the name of your shared directory and do it for each
share you use in network renders.

i did the net share and still get the same problem. i will say that sometimes the 1st network render is fast, then the 2nd, 3rd, ... are all slow to start. once they start, everything is fine. it's just that vegas seems hung for 2 to well over 5 mins. before it shows signs of doing anything. my CPU shows little activity also. i made a screenshot of how the menu bar disappears.

my system setup is as follows:

machine A:
windows xp pro
1GB ram
full vegas install
E:\vegas shared as 'vegas' (all project, render dirs, etc. under this)

machine B:
windows 2000 pro
512MB ram
render-only vegas install
can access \\machineA\vegas

machine C:
windows xp pro
512MB ram
render-only vegas install
can access \\machineA\vegas

i did your 'net share' command only on machine A.

OK, thanks... we'll continue to look into the problem.

Thank you both, very helpful input!
SonyPJM, it seems to act hung for 20 to 40 seconds before network rendering starts, then everything is peachy-keen.
Both machines have 1 Gig of RAM and connected with direct gigabit.
Yo Vegas is da bomb baby yeah
